Cleared for Full Approach on a Radar Required Approach?

Featured Replies

Still very new to Radar Contact. Love it. BUT, what the heck did I do wrong?

KPDK to KMSP Eau8 Arrival. Was cleared for ILS 4. FSX LOVES rnway 4 but it has been closed for almost 10 years in the RW now?

My bad need to update.

So I requested ILS 12R which is a RADAR REQUIRED approach and is a vectored approach. I know I could have self vectored but that defeats the purpose. I then asked for the vectored approach and was going to be cleared for ILS 4 again. At this point I know I am doing something wrong. Ive read most of the manual but not the parts that deal with these issues yet? Or I merely don't undstand them.

Anyhow if someone can give me a pointer on this Id appreciate it.

Respectfully,

Jet

If, when you set up the flight, you select the desired runway in the controller options page, you'll get vectors to the runway you choose there. If you ask for a specific approach in the runtime dialogue, it's going to give you clearance for a full approach (i.e. procedure turn/track)--no way I know of to force vectors to a specific runway in real time.

Hmm. Ok, more food for thought then while planning, that answers my question! Thank so much Bob!

When approach assigns a runway and you ack it request a different runway, not an IAP approach, and you should get vectors necessary. Those will be from your current position.

FYI:

In the real world world 4/22 still are used and have approach navaids. They are used for some military flights (there is a National Guard base near the end of 4 and 22 exits are close to the cargo areas. In wee hours freighters might request 22 and it will be granted usually.

RC in its runway assignments gives first priority to ai so if they are using 4/22 that is what you'll get. In really strong winds 4/22 may be used by any aircraft. It was also recently used to alleviate congestion during closings of one of the parallels for maintenance. To keep ai off of 4/22 use something like the freeware editor airport design editor to modify the afcad type file. You can try this:

Remove start locations from the 4/22 runways.

Open the taxi paths at the exits/entrances to 4/22.

Set the 4/22 properties to closed.

Backup any afcad before changing.

The run RC's rebuild scenery again. See if that helps.

When using KMSP be sure you check the RC controller page to insure it still has frequencies in case they are lost modifying the afcad.

Great info!! I will have to give that a try. I also need to update my navigraph in a big way too. :) That will help things.

Even when 4/22 is open MSP rarely and I mean RARELY uses it. I was lucky enough to use it a couple of times coming back from DLH. I ran freight in a BE100 from MSP DLH MSP for about a year. Made it really nice to turn off at near the end and taxi right over to DHL. Now that 35 is open and has been 4/22 really never gets used much at all. That said, for some reason MSFS likes to use 4/22 and has for some years. When I get time I would be VERY interested to change MSP around to have most traffic land on the 12s or 30s.

Thank so much for the info and the tip!

I checked the afcad file from KMSP. I have both ends of 4/22 closed for take-offs and landings. To be effective with ai both ends of a runway for these properties must match. I am not having any of these conflicts.

BTW, 17/35 is one way with 35 landings only and 17 take-offs only and for ai can not be implemented. There was a reprisal of arguments to open up 35 for take-offs and 17 for landings but it looks like that did not occur based on safety complaints from sources including the pilots' unions for safety reasons due to the extended runway course to the north conflicting with the 12/30 parallels.

AH wow I did not know that. Interesting. Can you imagine all the fallout that is coming when ORD changes all of its runways around. It will a welcome change for sure! But what a mess that is going to be.

I am going to get on your suggestion here later this week.

Again, Thanks so much for the tips and tricks for RC. This will help a lot.

Respectfully,

Jet
