The rise of the X-Plane forum

One must never lose sight of a very important fact here: Participation in these forums is strictly voluntary.

There are many, many more but doesn't it make sense if more and more customers are requesting a particular area that needs fixing/development that a receptive company will take attention to keep their present customers happy and therefore expand their user base when users see how receptive to user input such company is?

Here are some facts that we all need to accept:

Ben Supnik says:

We’re not sure for 10.30, but I think we’ll keep the feature list pretty tight. We still have some high priority fixes and a lot of irons in the fire relative to the size of the company, so I’m going to keep pushing for ‘tight’ releases.

Or that:

The current fog is what it is. I have a pile of bug reports and complaints about it. I have todo items in the bug base. I am not going to touch it for 10.20. Please do not post anything more on fog; we’ll look at it later when we’re not trying to finalize 10.20.

Or this:

Sorry if OT but Ben, what’s the thought about a OSM refresh? Any hint at all if we are talking ~1/~6/~12 month(s)?

We need to sort out the schedule for that internally…

Or…

Would have loved to get my basic WED airports uploaded and published in the product.

It’s been #2 on my list forever…it’s killing me that I haven’t had time to kick WED out the door, because so much of the work is already done.

That's all from the comments section on the developers blog latest post.

So by the time only SOME of the stuff will gets adressed, we will have enough time to discuss blade vs. lookup many, many more times. ;)

Yes-but the order of taking care of features/problems should (I would hope) be based on customer feedback, and if the customer does not give any then the developer will be unresponsive to the customer.

..and it does seem some fixes have been "fit" in-the fact is after every forum discussion on turbulence there has been a fix for turbulence in the next patch. Coincidence? Maybe...

Geofa, I do hope that, too. And I gave so much feedback (especially on 64bit beeing a necessity for Mac users) that once Ben was short of banning me from commenting on the developers blog ;). I also do beta test certain third party addons and give as much feedback as possible.

All I am saying is that this subforum, praised in the opening post, is a disappointment. I do not disagree on your examples. It's that they are few. 90% of the latest posts develop very differently to what one would wish if interested in an improving sim.

my observation .... if the "good ole boy" club doesn't agree with your criticism of xplane you are promptly told to go back to FSX. In really, many of the posts criticizing XPX are being done in good faith. I am sure that most of those posters are seeking improvements in XPX so that it cam become the premiere flight sim. I haven't understood why the XPX forums sometimes get extremely hostile.

My guess is that among those who are honestly looking to see X-Plane improve, there have also been the snarky, dismissive types the come here only to declare how superior FSX+ addons is, and to expressly state they're staying with FSX.

I mean, that's fine and all, but what's the point other than to come across as a douche? Tends to make one a little wary. Kinda like my experience years ago, fresh out of high school, when I got a part time job at Wal-Mart. Hundreds of great customers every day, and all it takes is one jack-&@($* to sour the mood the rest of the day.

The way I see things, yes there are topics that get recycled a lot. But the very fact that there is increasing overall participation in the x-plane forum shows that:

1. x-plane is something that more people like to spend time on. Therefore if it's not good already, then at least there's strong hope for it to be trending in that direction!

2. Criticisms of x-plane show that people actually care about the product! If everyone didn't like it and not only that, but didn't care, then people would move on and things would be much quieter on this forum. The fact that this forum is getting more active shows that more people care about the future of x-plane.

That would be a good sign. Like Ghandi said:

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."

You "get it" Anthony..... ,well said. Keep these forums full of constructive debate and criticism, everyday, hopefully the wishes, demands, and desires of the ever growing "hopeful" user base will come to be.

Like was said a few posts up, "Participation in these forums is strictly voluntary.", if the "good ole boy" club don't like it, perhaps they need to frequent the .org a bit more, a place where they "don't get it", or just move on. The rest of us will voice our "constructive" concerns here, and hopefully something "positive" will get done.

I often wonder if the X-Plane developers actually take note of people's complaints in these forums. I love the fact that finally it's going over to 64-Bit, but other areas have just been abandoned, e.g. ATC, weather, etc. By far the most requested/moaned about feature seems to be seasons. For me, I'm not bothered about the seasons, I like having an eternal summer :-)

It's been my experience around here, that things do get noticed, we are told that "it's" on the table or "is being thought of", but other things are of more importance due to resource restrictions.

Well, this excuse is old, and what needs to change, for Xplane to truly move forward. Get it done "in-house" with hired help, or "source it out", simple. It really is that simple.

I hate winter as well, but the immersion factor in Xplane is "ruined" by it's non-existence.

Ben explicitly states often enough that they ignore most forums stuff and concentrate on bug reports and those priorities first. You may have mentioned it here, but surely enough it wasn't the source for it beeing fixed.

The themes here show no variation: Goran vs. LAdamson, aircraft rolls left, fsx flies on rails, aircraft trim won't work, xplane is a moving target, wow you can do cool stuff with OSM, Goran vs. LAdamson, aircraft rolls right, night lightning is good, clouds are not, regional autgen is needed, xplane is always beta, Carenado planes aren't that bad, default ones are, the DC3 by Goran is nice even LAdamson admits it, turbulence is way overdone, wait! now it's fixed, ups no it's not, Blade Element Theory is in no way better than lookup tables, what? wrong!, I am so sad there is no EZ/REX/ORBX/PMDG otherwise I would immediately, yet another Goran vs. LAdamson, now tkyler has a say, is that the only employee? boy they need more people on board, …

P.S. I am really only complaining because I know what AVSIM can be, too. I experienced it completely different in the days of FLY!. What a helpful place that was. We made that worldwide CD shipping exchange, had all a bunch of really practical tips for that crazy settings file the sim had. And as a major difference of course: The developer himself was really involved, so that it actually made sense to put the complaints and wishes on the table.

This X-Plane forum has no practical use whatsoever. No files, no constructive informations, only those ever old issues that yield nowhere. Sorry to say that.

Example..................aircraft rolls to the left in cruise.

Answer ------ X-Plane org. ...... a lengthy explanation on how the engine torque is constantly trying to roll the airplane (including number of revolutions per minute), and how real pilots are constantly using right stick or yoke to counter it, throughout the course of the flight.

Answer ----- Avsim......................there is a problem with some of these flight models. There is more "roll" than there should be, and the sim is hunting, even after trimming. This is incorrect.

Note: Some responses at the org. were correct. However, the one with the lasting impression, followed by +1 thumbs up.........was the (incorrect)constant roll scenario.

If none of this is constructive to you, then don't blame it on me.

Let me phrase it like this: It does not surprise me that your answer consists of yet another repetition.

What's that clipboard-tool called? Seems practical. So indeed there seems to be at least something constructive. ;)

. Yes, let's make it just like the org. Are you an old timer over there?
