February 14, 201313 yr That's a great way to help. I double that. Great move, Matthew. I think that is safe to say in the majority of businesses right now. I am trying to position myself in a more stable sector of the industry. Makes sense, Chris. I still recall how the crew surrounding Sullenberger made use of the media attention and their status back then, explaining that e.g. the FO was a former captain (merger downgrade?) and is in need for at least running a second job. And that's on a big airline. Sullenberger himself spoke ( ) about some 40 or more percent of his income being cut over the years. http://www.huffingto...0_n_169512.html I'm far away from a general over-glorification of pilots, but this made me think. If the industry really wants safety and people making the right decision, it shouldn't spoil those folks with very basic financial or 'just' life planning problems. Efforts should aim at keeping a cockpit a working place, not a place where you have to worry about your other jobs and something to eat. Sorry, may be a bit off topic.
February 14, 201313 yr Author The majority of pilots I flew with all had second jobs to make up the income difference. Not until you get to a good Legacy carrier can you live off the pay. Most airlines are starting to get better, which is nice. Unfortunately the one I was at didn't get the memo. Chris Miller
February 15, 201313 yr Yeah it seems that whether you're here in Europe or half a world away in Hawaii, the problem is the same - I read a lot of bad things on pprune about a certain lo-cost Irish carrier and the orange-brigade and the contracts of their pilots being eroded over time.
