CTD always in mid flight

Recommended Posts

I am having a recurring CTD. It originally only happened with the PMDG NGX. I was flying it form KMCO to KBWI and it would always crash enroute. I flew the route over and over to try to see a pattern. The only one I saw was that it would happen in the same general area but not at the same place each time. Finally after one crash my FSX.CFG seemed to reset. The tweaks I made recommended in the NGX manual were gone and all the graphics and controller settings were reset in FSX. I reset everything to the way I had it before and the crashed stopped for a while. When they came back I just created a new FSX.CFG and was back to normal again. The CTDs are back but this time with the PMDG MD-11. This is the first time it has happened with anything other than the NGX. Attached it the appcrash report from one of the crashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My computer specs are in my signature.

When they came back I just created a new FSX.CFG and was back to normal again. The CTDs are back but this time with the PMDG MD-11. This is the first time it has happened with anything other than the NGX. Attached it the appcrash report from one of the crashes.

Hi Tom,

The fact that things went back to normal when you rebuilt your FSX.cfg indicates to me that you have your sliders set too high and/or you have a bad 'tweak'. The only real change to your fsx.cfg is the highmemfix=1 in the Graphics section. This usually fixes disappearing objects/aircraft. The faulting module for your crash was the ATC.dll. This could mean something if this dll keeps showing up in your crash reports but the faulting module could also mean fsx was trying to call a process, a gauge, a texture, and couldn't find it so crashed when the atc.dll was being called. The atc.dll is one of the GUI based modules responsible for handling in-game layout and dialogue correspondence with the main game function calls. It is dependent on the Windows files user32.dll, msvcr80.dll, kernel32.dll, and the FSX file called util.dll. The msvcr80.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. I see you have the latest version of that program installed. PMDG also uses the 2008 and 2010 MSV's and they appear to be up-to-date too. I doubt your problem is with the PMDG MD-11 or any other PMDG aircraft other than these aircraft use a lot of your system resources to run properly. So, if you have you FSX settings set too high, you are calling too many system resources to run FSX. You barely have enough memory for running FSX and I would look at adding another 4GB. FSX on a 64bit OS can only 'see' or use up to 4GB of memory and anything leftover (in your case nothing) is used to handle system functions/services. If you had 8GB's of RAM, your FSX could use up to 4 GB and use the other 4 GB's to keep your system running. Right now, it has to stop at around 2-3 GB's and let your system have the rest. So I'm pretty sure you have a memory resource problem.

Other causes could be an inadequate Power Supply, wrong memory configuration in your BIOS, a too high or too low CPU voltage setting or overheating.

Best regards,

Jim

My computer specs are in my signature.

Just a friendly reminder that AVSIM started a new signature policy last year. You can no longer have your specs or your FSX/FS9 software shown in your signature (the PMDG Signature is okay though). These items are now listed in your profile (see My PC and My Sim in the sidebar for my information). The policy is pinned at the top of many heavily used AVSIM forums like the FSX Forum. Thanks for your cooperation. Hope you can get your FSX back up and running w/o a crash soon!

Best regards,

Jim

Ok thanks for the help. I will add some memory. I have moved several of the sliders lower and was able to complete the latest flight that crashed. The other two MD-11 flights that crashed were Frankfurt to Dallas at about 9.5 hours into the flight. Very annoying. All of the latest three crashes showed ATC.DLL as the faulting module. I'm gonna give this thing a marathon flying workout and hopefully no crashes.

Well I installed the 8GB of memory but I had the same crash again. Same route EDDF-KDFW and it always happens in the vicinity of the top of descent. I don't know if this helps narrow in on whats causing it but when it happens the screen freezes briefly and the little blue donut that comes up when Windows is working spins for about five to ten seconds then CTD and then FSX restarts. I just deleted my FSX.CFG and the only changes I made to the new one were the HIMEMFIX=1, WideViewAspect=True and I changed all the numbers in dynamic head movement to 0. My previous FSX.CFG was configured from the venetubo.com site. I don't know if it will show anything different but I included the latest crashlog whith the 8GB of memory installed.
I just deleted my FSX.CFG and the only changes I made to the new one were the HIMEMFIX=1
Just to make sure, the entry in your fsx.cfg Graphics section should be highmemfix=1, not himemfix.

I see you have ASUS AI Suite installed. Did you overclock your system using that program? If so, that's your problem. It doesn't do a very good job at overclocking, especially proper memory configurations settings in the BIOS. I see it was one of the last programs to load prior to your crash on both crash reports you have provided. Try returning your overclock back to the default (or Normal) setting. See if the crashes continue. If you don't have the right frequency, timings and voltage set for your installed memory, you will eventually get a crash. Sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes it takes a day or two. ASUS has a hard time setting the proper frequency, timings and voltage when it tries to overclock your system. On the last page of your BIOS, under Tools, you should see ASUS SPD Information. Click on this. This provides the rated frequency, timings, and voltage for your installed memory. You'll have a column or columns of JEDEC and one with XMP. XMP can only be used if your BIOS profile is set to XMP. XMP is the best so that's normally what everyone wants. It uses the most out of your installed memory. If you look in the XMP column you will see the Frequency and the Voltage (usually 1.65V), and below that the timings. You now need to go to the AI Tweaker page. Here's how I set mine:

phe2T.jpg

See how/where I placed the XMP in the above photo. Then it automatically shows Profile#1, then the Turbo Ratio (by all Cores), then the next line where I have a 44 is the overclock. Mine is set at 4.4GHz. If you want a 4.0GHz overclock, you would enter 40. Make sure the Memory Frequency is what your memory is rated as. Again, that is shown in the Tool tab under ASUS SPD Information. If you look down a bit further, you will see DRAM Timing Control. Make sure the Primary Timings are set as shown in the ASUS SPD Information. The Secondary Timings can be left at Auto. The next photo completes my settings. I would suggest you set yours up with the same info.

qygws.jpg

So try this and see if it makes a difference or fixes your problem. There are so many possible reasons for your ATC.dll crashes it would be impossible to state them all. But now I'm almost certain it is your overclock settings that are causing your problem.

Best regards,

Jim

I originally set up my overclock in the BIOS menu. I don't have or can't find that utility you are using. I set up my overclock from a tutorial I found after doing some internet research. I really have very limited knowledge on the subject. It mentioned I could leave the memory voltage set to auto so that's what I did. I have now changed that to a hard 1.6483V or something like that. Close to 1.65V. I tried setting the BIOS to X.M.P. but when I did that the computer wouldn't even start. It just always said the overclock failed and forced me to go back to the old setting. I've started the offending flight again so we'll see what happens. The annoying part is that the crash happens right near the end of a 10 hour flight so it takes a long time to reproduce it. I'm just going to let if fly overnight while I sleep. Hopefully it will be ready to land when I wake up.

I have now changed that to a hard 1.6483V or something like that. Close to 1.65V.

This voltage is only good for the X.M.P. Profile. If you used a regular JEDEC profile, the voltage should be set at the voltage indicated at the bottom of that JEDEC. Usually that's 1.50V. If you go higher than what the JEDEC states, you will have a crash and possible damage to your memory. Using the X.M.P. profile gets the most out of your installed memory.

If you don't have it, you should get a program like HWiNFO - http://www.hwinfo.com/ that monitors your systems health, like voltages and overheating. Because your crashes come at the end of a long flight, it's possible you have an overheating issue. The faulting module was the ATC.dll module which is loaded at the start of FSX and is used as one of the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) modules responsible for handling in-game layout and dialogue correspondence with the main game functions calls. It depends on the user32.dll, the msvcr80.dll, the kernel32.dll, and the util.dll. Sometimes it will have problems displaying multiple image streams, especially when it renders multiple overlays. So, if you have a lot of windows open, it may be having a hard time rendering them all. In the past, this module crashed due to an unstable overclock and overheating. This may make it more difficult for the ATC module to execute its functions properly. If you are flying into a complex location, you might try lowering your fsx settings.

If it is only happening with the PMDG MD-11, you might look at it's installation too by uninstalling/reinstalling the product. Perhaps something got corrupted.

Best regards,

Jim

Well I just successfully completed that flight. I did make a bunch of changes since the last attempt so I can't be 100% sure if it was one of those or just a fluke. I also updated to the latest BIOS. I do have monitoring software but mine doesn't look at all like the one you showed. This computer is a FSX only computer so I have minimal programs running. Usually just Active Sky 2012, TrackIR, and FSX Follow. Every MD-11 crash I have had happened in the DFW area but not necessarily near the airport. Every other time I have had this problem was with the PMDG NGX, the MD-11 problems only started recently. Oh and it was HIGHMEMFIX=1 I just mistyped. I'm just going to keep flying and see if it recurs. Thanks for the help.
