DX10 Preview Checkbox Missing After GPU Upgrade

Recommended Posts

So I decided to upgrade my ATI 6770 to a GTX 660ti. After the install, driver upgrade, etc I went to check out FSX. I no longer have the ability to see the DX10 preview. I tried deleting the fsx.cfg and made sure that I removed the ATI drivers before installing the new card. I had been running the DX10 with the 6770 with great results as long as I didn't run any weather. Weather now is no problem I just want my DX10 back.

This is not a Dx10 issue.

There is a small chance that the card is defective, however much more likely is that you have not either

correctly uninstalled the Ati drivers and/or correctly installed the Nvidia drivers.

I suggest the following..

Put your Ati card back into your computer and use system restore to return the drivers to their original state.

There is an Ati driver removal utility here

http://support.amd.c...ll-utility.aspx

Download it and use it to completely remove the Ati drivers.

When prompted to reboot, turn the PC off and install your new Nvidia card.

Restart the computer and Windows will install drivers for it.

Once done, you can install the latest drivers from Nvidia.

Oh dear.

Again, I am assuming that the card is not defective and that your PC contains the correct hardware to support the new card.

Perhaps you can download and re-install Direct X.

If the problem persists, another thing you can do is install a clean copy of FSX, without affecting your existing one.

First, rename the folder where you have FSX installed.

Create a new, empty folder with the same name as your original FSX folder.

Insert disc one and select the repair option then follow the usual procedure through to the end of the

installation.

This will install a fresh copy and you can use it to check if your Dx10 preview problem lies with FSX.

If it makes no difference, you can return to your original installation by renaming or deleting the new folder

and restoring the name of the original.

If it does cure the problem, most, if not all of your addon scenery, addon aircraft and other extras you may

have can be copied from one folder to the other.

I have no idea whether or not your new card is faulty and /or compatible with your motherboard.

I have repaired driver problems using the method I suggested.

I have repaired FSX numerous times using this method.

I assume that you updated your installation of Direct X as required.

I have no more useful suggestions and can be of no further assistance.

Everything I tried blew up in my face so now I am back to square one. I copied my D:\Program Files directory over to E: for a backup and uninstalled all of my FSX stuff. I reformatted my D: drive and I have begun the process of reinstalling everything. Good news is that after the FSX install I have the DX10 preview check box again. :-)

Hi John: I don't know your current status, but DX10 depends upon FSX SP2 or Acceleration being installed properly, plus the GPU supporting DirectX v10 - which it does for sure.

So you can do two things: 1) repair the existing installation, or 2). install a new & clean FSX.

At this stage - it is probably much better to un-install - re-install FSX, and that is what I suggest. It's not too difficult - just time-consuming, but you can be sure that DX10 is going to work the first time. Follow this (courtesy of PMDG) pdf here, but first save your old settings, like so:-

- Create a folder called "FSX backup" on another partition.

- Copy the main folder (where your fsx.exe lives) into the backup folder:

- Copy your recorded flights (Documents\Flight Simulator X Files).

- Copy the FSX folder - C:\ProgramData\Microsoft.

- Copy the FSX folder - C:\Users\{your username}\AppData\Local/Microsoft\.

- Copy the FSX folder - C:\Users/{your username}\AppData\Roaming/Microsoft.

They are all the files affected by the installation of FSX. This backup will be useful later if you want to recover files or folders you have modified. Once you've backed up your userfiles - then follow the pdf.

Hope this helps:

All the Best,

Good to know you're back in business again, John. It looks like our posts got crossed.

One thing I do want to add, though, is - I just went through a similar exercise this last three days, except my issue was with the os not letting the CoolSky DC-9 security system work (no problem with DX10), but after the reinstall of the OS and FSX complete - the SweetFX software will not let FSX run in DX10 mode. I don't get the preview option. Remove/rename the dxgi.dll and she's DX10, put it back - no preview - (also no jaggies  )

That's too bad, as I quite liked SweetFX.

Very Strange.

hey john, m glad you got it working but i believe i had the same issue when i got myself a new graphic card nvidia gtx 650 and my fsx wouldnt load initially. but after few tweaks here and there and god knows how i managed or what i did to make it run, but my fsx use to just hang after a min or so inflight. so i reinstalled all from the scratch and wallah...a smooth fsx.

@ the sky is the limit

mine works pretty cool its about sweetfx setting try the one i am posting here the original setting is been taken from the net but i made minor adjustments to suit my taste.

I had the same issue when i installed one of the first version of the SceneryFixer and during a uninstall of the Fixer software it deleted the SHADERSHL folder in my FSX directory. Putting back the original gave me the DX10 check inside FSX again.
