FL100 Procedure

Recommended Posts

I was doing a flight to OEJN this afternoon where the transition level is at FL150. So passing FL150 in descent, I set the local QNH on the altimeter.

I've noticed that when passing 10 000 ft in descent in this case, that the FO was saying "FL100 procedure".

Bryan do you confirm that it shouldn't be "10 000ft procedure" in the FO's dialog if TL is above FL100 ?

That might be related to North American rules of FL100 where landing lights are turned on and speed under 250knt observed?

Yes it was. Long before TOD. I always prepare the approach during cruise, including TL and winds forecast.

I've noticed the same during climb when departing OEJN.

TA is 13000ft and is set in the FMC during flightdeck preparation.

During the climb, the FO says "FL100". I think it should say 10 000 ft as I haven't pass thru the TA yet.

I just looked at the code to refresh my memory how this call works...

The call (whether 10,000 or FL100) depends on the BARO selector position.

If it's set to inHG it assumes you're in the US/Canada and it will use feet, ie., 10,000 feet.

If it's set to MB, it assumes you're not in the US/Canada, and it will use FL.

Cheers,
