February 26, 201313 yr I've spent approximately the past three months on researching for parts, and the past two months acquiring the parts for a new build. This build is dedicated for FSX, however, I will still use it daily. Although I say this is built for FSX, I'm more referring to the fact that I built this for NGX and the upcoming 777. I understand the discussion of 777 not being out, and one may not know for certain how it will perform. However, I was told to keep my expectations moderate. The purpose of this thread is, what do you consider as a moderate expectation of performance for my specs~~ and to brag (sorry, had to include this ^^) CPU: Intel i7 3770K ~ Min OC 4.7GHz; Idea OC 5.0GHz; Try to push 5.2GHz or more if possible MB: Asus ROG Maximus V Gene z77 Chipset RAM: G.Skill 8GB (2x4GB) CL9 2400MHz GFX: Nvidia GTX580 Cooling: XSPC RayStorm D5 Vario EX360 with Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP15 fans on Push Pull (I realise this is an overkill, but it would be better to have more than not enough) SSD: 2x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB ~ One dedicated for OS, photoshop, lightroom, office etc., the other, FSX only HDD: WD Cavier Black SATA III (6Gb/s) 64mb 2TB PSU: Corsair HX850 v2 850W 80 Plus Gold Case: NZXT Switch 810 Case fans: Noctua NF-S12Bs Fan Controller: NZXT Sentry 2 Monitor: 2x 1920x1080 21" This I understand is not the top end machine, but I don't intend to pile on the addon. Usually I install all the addons I need regularly, and only install those ones I use before I fly. If addons I do not use regularly, as in I hardly use it I fly with it, and delete it at the end, just to keep the drive tidy. What do you guys think one should expect from this system in cases where NGX is running full quality in VC, with low, medium, and dense complexity scenery and HD clouds? March 4, 201313 yr Brendan, I have just purchased the NGX for my own PC, and the framerates are fine. I have an Intel Core i5 2500k @ 4.3Ghz/8GB DDR3-1600 RAM/1GB GeForce GTX 560Ti powered system, so not as powerful as the specification that you have listed above. Mind you, I only use one monitor at 1280x1024 resolution..... Just one question......how much video RAM does that GTX580 have? Christopher Low AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU / 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM / 12GB Nvidia RTX 4070 Super GPU / Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite Wifi 7 / 1+2TB Samsung Evo Plus M2 Nvme UK2000 Beta Tester
March 4, 201313 yr Hi Brendan, My system is a i7 2600k with water cooling, OC to 4.6 GHz I find I get about 33-55fps when approaching LOWI on say tutorial 2, or when approaching /parked at say ORBX YMML or YBBN. I do not have a weather engine, so, can't comment on clouds. I have my fps unlocked. Some of my sliders maxed, some 1/2 way and some off. I find the water cooling maintains temps about 35-40c when OC running FSX. I would imagine temps would rise a tad if you OC to 5+GHz. Regards Geoff Bryce
March 4, 201313 yr Author Just one question......how much video RAM does that GTX580 have? Just a standard 1.5GHz from memory, I can't quite remember though. Brendan Chen Learning to use and getting use to FSX!
March 4, 201313 yr HI Brendan - You can see my PC specs on the left. Although I am not using an Intel processor, other specs are comparable. I would say the most important part to FSX performance is your .CFG file. After I followed Word Not Allowed's .CFG tuning guide my performance was increased dramatically (never drops below 30fps under high load). Even with a high powered system your FPS will suffer if your CFG file isn't set up to match your system's capabilities. Even much lower powered systems will run FSX and the PMDG NGX just fine with the right CFG file set up. This is JMO but your ram and GPU could be better compared to the rest of your specs You would notice a difference with 16Gb of ram and a GPU with a little more memory / faster clock speed. Enjoy your new flying machine! Ben Weaver SWA8485

Wow really!? Yea GPU I just used an old one off my last computer, dusted it off and install I go! I does what I need it to do anyway, so I'll wait for the TiTan to drop in price. RAM wise others advised me on what to get. But I don't think FSX ever uses the whole 8GB anyway as it was supposedly a 32bit application, using only 3.25GB or whatever the value is but it's under 4. Which means I will still have 4.75GB of RAM to do other stuff. Again I am no FSX wiz so wouldn't have a clue. At the moment I am experiencing unbelievably high temps on Prime95 using default settings and stock components. So got to figure out what's going on as well... :( Brendan Chen Learning to use and getting use to FSX!

I have seen up to 6.5Gb of ram being used while running my sim. You will be fine at 8Gb but, of course, 16Gb is always better Good idea to get your temps sorted first. After you get your temps safe, do a forum search for Word Not Allowed's FSX tuning guide and follow it - you will be amazed. Good luck and happy flying! Ben Weaver SWA8485
March 4, 201313 yr Author Yea I have used Word Not Allowed's tweak before, it's amazing! The temp problem I tried to contact intel through live chat and email, but none of them I was able to reach them. It's getting frustrating. Any ideas how I can reach them? March 4, 201313 yr Great system! But why a GTX 580? It's starting to get out of stock so the prices are a bit high. GTX 660Ti will perform equally or better and is cheaper. Arjen Vandervelde

The 580 was from my old machine, didn't want to upgrade the graphics card yet as all I play is SimCity 5 (releasing very very soon ) and FSX. Brendan Chen Learning to use and getting use to FSX!
March 5, 201313 yr Author My system is now under leak test, been running for hour n half now. Here's what it kinda looks like with the finished product (if you are interested). Brendan Chen Learning to use and getting use to FSX!
March 5, 201313 yr Any ideas how I can reach them? Sorry Brendan I've never had to contact them before so I can't help with that. Your system looks very nice. Do you have any intake fans in the front of your case or other internal fans besides just exhaust fans? Air flow is very important even on liquid cooled systems. More internal fans will help your heat problem by getting more air moving across the MB, NB, GPU and even the CPU. Just a suggestion B) Ben Weaver SWA8485

I have two NZXT OEM case fans which makes some noise. One is in front panel intake, and one is blowing air onto the graphics card. Then 2 Noctua NF-S12B. One acting as rear exhaust, the other is bottom intake. So there should be plenty of air circulating inside the case. Brendan Chen Learning to use and getting use to FSX!
