Equipment Coding quick Question

Quick question, whenever I go on Flightaware, or any aviation website or anywhere really and It says the name of the aircraft it always say like "a320-232" or 777-232. what is the -232?? I know that the 2 is probably to indicate the 777-200 or the a320-200, and I know that they also say 772, a322, 752, etc. Jut dont know what the number in the middle is.

For Boeing aircraft it is the code for the original customer eg 36 for British Airways so B747-436 or B777-236. I was looking at the customer codes the other day on Wikipedia. As for Airbus it refers to aircraft engine combinations I believe.

So why is it the code for the original customer? Does it change every time the customer does? For airbus the engine combination makes sense.

I guess for various options that the customers want installed in the aircraft when manufactured across their fleet. It remains the same for the life of the airframe so even if it passes onto 5 or 6 different airlines you could always identify the original one (not sure on why Boeing decided to do this though)

Ok it makes sense...just a bit strange. I wonder why they didn't go with the engine combination like airbus.

well boeing came before aribus, so I guess you could say it's strange airbus didn't do the customer coding way. Either way if you know what that customer uses, say Continental used rolls royce for their 757s, you know now when you see a United 757-224 that it was originally Continental's and that it has RR engines.
