April 3, 201313 yr Author Please understand that I was not taking these just to show the weather it was just for GP's. Looks real nice too Ron!
April 3, 201313 yr Interesting and nice cloud formations but the question is, is there any impact on the framerates? Panos Kotzias
April 3, 201313 yr That first shot is indeed something I've never seen with AS2012. I still haven't been able to make my mind up whether i should give Opus a try... So many differing opinions! Don't. I wish I hadn't. Now I can't stop looking at clouds in real life. I have a cloud fixation. Best overall fsx improvement addon ever (up there with FSUIPC, FEX and GSX)
April 3, 201313 yr I did gave Opus a try about 2 months ago. In the end, I came back to AS2012 (superb product with the SP2). Main reasons were cloud shifts during flight (something that is a real show stopper for me) and very unstable winds on approach, not in accordance with the METAR. I must say that I only fly in Europe (don't know if the weather data for the US is different) and with online realtime weather. I don't know if they overcame these issues in recent updates or even if there was something I could do to avoid them (configuration seemed straight forward to me, but you never know). AS2012 with SP2 is, as far as I am concerned, the best weather engine out there (I have OPUS, REX and AS2012), at least for high flyers using online weather. The work they did with visibility when inside / crossing a cloud layer is just superb, IMHO. Also, no issues with winds, temps or pressure abnormal changes. Sergio Silva
April 3, 201313 yr I fly mostly in Europe and I have no problems with incorrect or erratic winds during descent and approach at all. Forecast real world winds aloft are aligned with what you get in OpusFSX during cruise. Often, when I fly realtime schedules with the NGX, I compare the GS to my realworld counterpart on flightradar24.com. It is practically identical all the way, give or take 2-3 knots. OpusFSX works like a charm for me and beats the other weather engines I own by a mile and a half. Daniel Nilsson
April 3, 201313 yr I have no weather addons for my FSX (I know, I really should get on that!), mostly because whenever there are really any cumulous clouds (especially if it is overcast) with FSX default weather, my game immediately drops to the single digit frames. I have feared that with REX, Opus, AS or whatever this would only be worse because of the HD textures... is this the case? Or have they really optimized performance for these addons? Thanks! By the way, GREAT screenshots, Opus looks awesome Best regards, happy flying, Wallace

Wallace, I honestly don't notice any performance issues with Opus. I can't imagine flying in fsx without it. I think you can still try the demo version of OpusFSX and check it out. Only way to find out is to try it on your rig. Daniel Nilsson
April 3, 201313 yr Does OPUS allow for external turbulence? I can't seem to see any turbulence from external views.

April 4, 201313 yr How about for REX? Do you feel that it hurts performance? I use REX for the textures in combination with Opus for the wx engine. I do not notice any adverse effects on performance with Rex. I have used it for so long, I can't remember flying without it though. My FSX is basically set up around the NGX and it is performing great at the moment. No two rigs are the same however. Daniel Nilsson

I am sure my rig is indeed pretty different than yours, but that is helpful and good to know, thank you. Best regards, happy flying, Wallace
April 4, 201313 yr I have REX, OPUS, and AS2012 ... sadly NONE of their weather engines cut it for me ... so I'm back with just REX. All of their weather engines had these problems: 1. None actually had a proper weather front/system 2. One minute multiple cloud layers the next minute clear sky then a few minutes later back to nothing but clouds 3. The cloud layers look repetitive 4. Turbulence was very unrealistic, calm flight then a sudden hit of wind sending the aircraft 90 degrees off course then immediately calm again for the next 30 minutes ... one shot wonder turbulence 5. Never experienced any turbulence that impacts the aircraft in the vertical directions, always horizontal 6. Haze, none of them seem to get it right I've tried all their suggested settings to get a better "weather" environment but still can't ... the textures are great, but the weather engine leaves MUCH to be desired. All seem to blame FSX limitations for not being able to provide real weather systems ... hmm, I don't know, seems like a opportunity/challenge to me If anyone knows of a great weather engine that can run on a separate PC (networked) that can actually setup weather systems that don't instantly change because of one or two bad weather station area data reads, please let me know. But so far OPUS, REX, AS2012 have not accomplished this.
