This coming Sunday, March 24th, AVSIM will celebrate its 16th birthday. We'll finally get our learner's permit. Someone get the party hats and the "sweet 16" banners! Please, no candles and German Chocolate cake only!

Seriously, there are many of you who have been with us from the very beginning and we appreciate your participation, contributions, and support over all these years. Our thanks to all of you for being part of our extended family.

Congrats Tom, happy sweet 16!!! If my old brain serves me right I'm one of those with you from the very beginning and never looked back.

The best flight simulation website on the web, PERIOD!!!

Keep up the great work and thanks for reminding me that I'm getting old! Also, you owe me thousands of dollars for getting my ppl and instrument (almost finished instrument) as a result of joining Avsim......

Cheers,

Pete

Just for the 16th birthday, how about throwing open a sort of party where we bring our nostalgic memories of how along with Avsim, we have marched the sands of time from what our hobby was in those yesteryears, software and hardware-wise, to where it is today?

Just an idea..........mmmh

Yep Pete, you have been around since the old forums which were all text based. That was the Neanderthal days. Thanks for being around and when it comes to your debt, well, you are on your own. :p0503:

Wow, 16 years.  I can't remember when I joined.  I was certainly simming sixteen years ago and I had dial up Internet access.  Things were so different back then.  Happy Birthday Avsim.  Thanks for the service and fellowship.

Not sure when we first met. Some issue around 2002 caused user ID's to be purged and new ones recreated.  But my ride has been for most of 15 years after the demise of the old Prodigy Network and the full emergence of the internet.  Happy Birthday with a real BIG PLUS + !!!

AVSIM personifies simulation flying !!!

In the real world of flying their is AVGAS.

In the simulated world of flying there is AVSIM.

Yes, that was when we went from the old text based forum system to an intermediate forum and then we transferred to this one sometime around 2006. When we went from the old text based system to the intermediate one, we lost all user ID's and PW's. But, that was almost a fact of life in those days. Your memory is better than mine, that is for sure. I had totally forgotten that.

Might not be a 16 year veteran of Avsim, but I'm sure grateful to be apart of this great community.

Why don't you cause yet more pain to us members of Avsim and code a 'retro' style Avsim, just for the day to celebrate being 16?

All it takes is a village... er, no, wait... that wasn't the right quote.. All it takes is a community. That's it.

If we did that do you know how many drive by shootings we would get? The WHOLE AVSIM is evil crowd would see it as the ultimate conspiracy theory. If you want to do that, just go to the WAY BACK MACHINE and take a look see at Retro AVSIM. You can find that here:

Here is what the web site looked like in June of 1997:

MAIL LIST SERVER SHUT DOWN

Tuesday, June 17, 1997 2:16:41 PM

For some reason that we have not been able to determine, our mail server this morning started to misbehave rather badly, even to the extent of sending mail to some poor soul on Compuserve who did not know the difference between an airplane and a blimp. There were some other issues that we were not comfortable with, and as a result, we have shut the system down until we can find a replacement program. Until then, we ask for your understanding. We hope to have a replacement system up and running shortly.

Some things never freaking change and I have had a constant headache for 16 years. Now I remember why.

fppilot evoked a memory that I too had joined way back in 2002 until that outage that took Avsim down and had to re-register all over again, so have been a Member of This Club for a good few years too.

Don't have to ask me twice, just polished off a cupcake and a slice of red velvet (hardly on the level of German Chocolate).  Happy Birthday AVSIM!
