Sharing home built pilot chair / cockpit (economic solution)

Recommended Posts

Hi to all!

I designed and constructed (with the help of my father) this simple pilot chair / cockpit.

The total cost of materials was under $60 USD.  The total labor was around 8 hours (day 1: 4 hours, day 2: 3 hours, day 3: 1 hour), but it can be constructed in less time if you have all the materials available.

The main materials are 1” x 1” x 20’ square tubing (2), about 8 feet of sch-40 ½” PVC pipe, difference sizes of machine screws, a piece of 2” x 4” x ½” (or ¾”) plywood, some emt tubing metal straps (8), and a few simpson strong-tie truss clips (4).

The foot print of the pilot chair is 18” wide by 44” long, but it can be reduced to 30” if you don’t include the front square where the Saitek pedals fit.  The design was made taking into consideration the reduced space I have around my PC and the low weight of the chair.  The low weight was important because my wife can move the chair without help in case she needs to work with the computer.

The chair has two modular surfaces.  One where you can rest the keyboard and the other with enough space for two Saitek throttle quadrants and some extra space for the mouse or your favorite snack or beverages.  These modular surfaces are very easy to install and remove.

Looks like you're having fun! Are you sure you want your wife getting close to that? My cockpit setup is so complex, no one comes near it except me which is just how I like it :)
