Hi guys,

A few days ago I had crashes in FSX. A kind man helped me find out what was wrong, the ENB series was the problem. BUT now it gone alright, until this minute. I was flying about 50 minutes when I wanted to save (3rd time) when FSX suddenly quit without message that what was wrong, so I launched Event Viewer and I saw this message:

" A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Flight Simulator X v10.0.61637.0) "

and at that same time this one:

" The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application "

nothing more, no crash logs about e.g. uiautomationcore.dll or SweetFX but I believe that this kind of crash wasn't caused by SweetFX.

I searched the net about this kind of crash but I did not find so much things about this crash. I have installed uiautomationcore.dll (proper version), I have Window 7 with the latest updates and with the latest nvidia graphic drivers.

Can somebody help me out what went wrong? I really can't understand why Microsoft stopped FSX development.

Thanks :)

Desktop Window Manager effectively = the "Aero" UI in Windows Vista and 7, which is automatically disabled by FSX and is normal. I doubt those messages have anything to do with your CTD.

Usually a CTD where the sim just disappears like this is an exhaustion of virtual address space - sometimes the "Your computer has run out of memory" error appears with these kinds of CTDs and sometimes it doesn't.

Might be that because several days ago I followed NickN's guide to properly configure Windows for best performance and I remember that I changed the virtual memory for 3072 MB. Before I had 8175 MB set by default. May this cause the CTDs in FSX?

I have found FSX runs better at System Managed Size.

So, what was your CTD?  The one's you mentioned in OP were not crashes and normal warning messages (FSX does not work with AERO running).

Download and run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html and copy and paste the results of the report in this post.

Best regards,

Jim

I downloaded the app crash view and looked for yesterday's date and time when my FSX crashed, but did not find any crashes related to FSX, so I think as @@Tabs said I could have too low virtual memory set what I changed back to system managed as you recommended. The last reported crash I had was when ENB crashed but because now I don't use that it couldn't be.

Anyway Thanks, again :)

It crashed again, I could not fix it with setting to system managed size. It always happens when I flight and when I save it 3rd time. I really don't know how to fix this if I don't have any crash report about it? But in the event viewer I have many warnings about this:

" ERROR: mDNSPlatformReadTCP - recv: 10053 "

and the second is:

" 304: ERROR: read_msg errno 0 (The operation completed successfully.) "

and these two messages repeating since I started FSX. In Event Viewer at the source it says it's a "Bonjour Service"

In AppCrashView no new crash report was made. I'm using Radar Contact v4.3 with Active Sky 2012. No other program runs while I'm in FSX.

The error message - " ERROR: mDNSPlatformReadTCP - recv: 10053 " and "304: ERROR: read_msg errno 0 (The operation completed successfully.)" are related to the Bonjour Service which is installed for Apple's iTunes - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3507281?start=30&tstart=0 and http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/188240-itunes-constantly-breaks-and-won-t-talk-to-apple-tv-s.  I read it is almost impossible to uninstall.  Here's a link on a possible way to get rid of it - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/adobes-bonjour-service-seems-to-be-the-cause-of-my/55ce7a01-1a6a-4e10-96f2-be66428beab0.  I do not have this service installed so cannot help you other than provide the links above.

I think I will re-install iTunes, but anyway I don't think that iTunes caused the crashes. Just now I deleted the FSX.cfg and let FSX to rebuild a new, Applied the venetubo's fixes and tweaks. I will test FSX in the upcoming couple days before I go for the 1st flight.

Thank You very much

Ok, I tested. It doesn't work normally as it should. I'm really tired into testing every day with different setting and seeing it doesn't work. Now I have set for me the best SweetFX but I getting crashes with no error. I couldn't find any crash reports about FSX crash. It just quits after flying around 40-45 minutes so I always have to fly 40-45 mins. Could anybody help to fix this??? Please ? I tried with ENB, with SweetFX and with FXAA but any of these made FSX to not crash.

Perhaps I didn't explain myself sufficiently.  The crashes/problems are related to the Bonjour service and iTunes.  You'll have to get that program resolved first before you can ever use FSX again.

Are you sure? I've already reinstalled iTunes and now I don't get those reports with iTunes (or with Bonjour Service) in Event Viewer but my fsx still crashes, now I think I'm testing last time, it's really irritating.

Bonjour runs as a service, you can stop the service via Task Manager.  You can also stop Apple Mobile Device service.  You should also terminate iPodService.exe process and iTunesHelper.exe processes.  I've been coding an application to manage all these services and process but haven't finish it yet ... just too busy with a million other projects.

NOTE: Important to STOP the services FIRST before attempting to end any process.  If you don't stop the service first, the process can come "back to life" so to speak.

If you suspect an OOM issue, then load Task Manager and monitor FSX.EXE memory usage ... you'll need to run FSX in Window Mode (but maximized) and if you have a 2nd monitor move Task Manager window over to it so you can see memory usage real time as you fly.  OOM event message typically will log to the Events Log as it triggers an OS exception, if you don't see the event, then it's probably not an OOM and something else.

If that's the case, you'll need to go down the road of diagnostics ... meaning you'll need to revert to a base FSX.CFG and base DLL.XML and base EXE.XML (backup your existing ones first).  If you are still having a problem with FSX crashing then I'd start looking at hardware/driver issues.  I assume you are running FSX on a Mac via Bootcamp?  Hopefully not via Parallels or any VM product?

No, my FSX is running on PC

I paste here everything I have related to FSX, my PC config and settings:

Active Sky 2012

GEX Europe and Africa

REX Overdrive with set to Max texture size 1024

TreeX

AES

GSX

Radar Contact 4.3

PMDG 737NGX

QWSim Bae/RJ

Captain SIm 767

SweetFX with Bloom disabled both in SweetFX and FSX

I have I5 2500 CPU

Motherboard:  H61M-S2 B3

with 8 GB of RAM

and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 by Gigabyte.

My FSX settings are almost full except some like: traffic (31%) FPS is set to unlimited with resolution of 1440X900x32bit. All shadows are enabled. Just mesh resolution is set to 10M, Scenery Complexity and Autogen Density set to very dense and dense anyway others are on full. The weather distance is set to minimal (60 mi) and cloud coverage is set to High. I attach my FSX.cfg and SweetFX, so you can take a look at some things I did not mention. One thing I wanna mention: I always tested FSX with the following things: PMDG 737NGX at Taxi2Gate Bratislava with GSX enabled and I noticed one thing, if I do not request GSX services then I probably will not have crash, but with GSX at the aircraft I will have crashes within 40-50 minutes. I know that I would test with other aircraft on other sceneries but my only goal is just to achieve FSX to work with GSX in Bratislava Airport and to run normally.

Thanks you that you spend a lot of time investigating what can cause my crashes :) you are very kind
