really embarassing accident .. and very good reading

Recommended Posts

My favorite section of FLYING mag. is the Aftermath in which Peter Garrison selects some aircraft accident and takes it apart analyzing what happened and why.In the last (July) issue he talks about the Sabreliner biz jet which flew from Argentina to Maui (Hawaii) with a day stop-over in Tahiti. The final destination was the island of Molokai. After clearing customs in Maui they took off for the final 15-min island hop to Molokai. The night was clear, no clouds, 10 mile visibility and they flew into a mountain while on final to the airport (thinking that the mountain was a cloud !).Anyway, excellent reading and I can't think of a more embarassing fatal mistake a professional crew (pilot and co-pilot) could make.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

They mistaked a mountain for a cloud? That is embarrasing- also know that you died becase of a really stupid mistake, wow... thats ... worse than "why is that mountain goat way up here in the clouds?":-erksJason :-wave

"Cumulo-granite" Actually during most recurrent training at the "majors" one session in the classroom is spent looking over recent accident/incident files as an expensive (for those directly involved) learning tool. Those of you interested in "tin-kicking" should checkout the US's National Transportation Safety Board's website (www.NTSB.Gov) and read the synaposes. It is an education at somebody else's expense. Most of the time when I browse them its a case of "...they did WHAT????"Tim757
