"best monitor" for fsx

Featured Replies

I am slowing getting my pc together, and will wait for Haswell and the at that moment latest single fastest GPU from Nvidia.

I am building with water cooling etc, but actually my biggest problem is the monitor....

I really would like to go at least 27" but I know, that I have to watch out for high resolution.

Do I need IPS? how much Hz? Reflection? night flying?

What about 16:10 ratio or others? Does it need to be a gaming monitor for FSX ( tering / lag )

I am enjoying scenery as well as fluent ( high FPS ) flying so I would like to now what's the best monitor for this at the moment?

hope someone could point me to some good monitors for fsx.

thanks ,2560 x 1600 would that be not a little to much for a single GPU card? And 60 HZ only is that ok?

Hi Pilotter,

I have bought a new monitor around 3 months ago.
Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236302

I
t's 27 inches big, and has a resolution of 1080p. I know what you're talking about regarding resolution. But no, on this monitor it doesn't look pixelated at all compared to my 22 inch monitor.
It's TN panel but yet the colors are very vibrant so bright. Only under an angle, the colors get a little distorted, but who cares? You're never looking at your monitor under an angle, right?

Of course you can choose to go 1440p or even 1600p, but that just depends if you want to spend twice the money on something that might only reduce your performance despite the better eye candy. If you have a very good video card, you might observe no performance loss but I'm not sure as I've never had an UHD monitor.

Regarding the panel type, you can choose for IPS or VA, but you'll get a lower response time only, and only under an angle the colors will look significantly better. I find the colors of this monitor to be extremely vibrant and above all it's got a 1 ms response time!

I highly recommend this monitor, go for it!

thanks Arjen,

it just happens I was looking for the asus MX279H;

Panel Size : 27.0"(68.6cm) 16:9 Breedbeeldscherm

Panel Type : AH-IPS

True Resolution : 1920x1080

Full HD 1080P : Yes

Pixel Pitch : 0.311mm

Brightness(Max) : 250 cd/㎡

ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio (ASCR) : 80000000:1

Viewing Angle (CR≧10) : 178°(H)/178°(V)

Response Time : 5ms (Gray to Gray)

Display Colors : 16.7M

will this not be to pixelated? or should I go to higher resolution for 27"? the prize is 350 euro so that would really benefit me over the dell 3014 ( about 1100). although 30"is tempting, I think it will cost me a lot of fps.

Not sure on FPS I would think a single 670 or 680 would do fine, if anyone has a dell u3011 or u3014? They might know better.

yes that's what make me worry. IPS looks good and also 27" but the higher resolution and input lag......

and then there is 21:9 ....

It's video memory that you need for higher resolutions so for a 30" monitor I'd suggest you would need a 4GB card. If you went for a 27" you could probably get away with a 2GB card especially at the lower 1920x1080 resolution, though my preference in 27" would be for a 2560x1440 panel for the sharper picture quality. I'm aware that there is a potential issue with FSX in DX9 mode and cards with over 2GB of memory effecting the amount of Virtual Address Space (VAS) available which can lead to Out of Memory errors. If you're considering a 4GB card this might be something you want to explore before making the decision.

I've just switched from a LG 22" TN (1680x1050) to a Dell 24" IPS (1920x1200) and I can say I wouldn't worry too much about the lower response times with IPS panels, I don't notice it. I'm an amature photographer so I really needed the better colour reproduction and viewing angles, the difference between the two monitors in those aspects are night and day. Having said that if you have a TN panel now you will be more than happy with a new TN panel, though I don't think you would want to go from IPS to TN.

I'd triple-check that FSX can support 21:9 before considering it.

Any of the Dell Ultrasharp models are worth considering, Dell's implimentation of the LG IPS panels seem to have better results than most.

/Edit: Forgot to mention that Dell's 3 Year onsite warrenty that comes with their Ultrasharp monitors is brilliant, guarenteed pixel perfect screen and any issues you get a no quible swap-out.

Oef, you make it more difficult. I was looking for a 27" 2560 x 1440 ( asus / samsumg or dell )and to use it with a titan 4mb. Is this vas thing really bad. I am not so into memory usage but want to run my sim smooth.

Seriously I don't know if the VAS issue would affect you, as I don't know a lot about it other than FSX has a total of 4GB of Virtual Address Space to work with and I beleive with DX9 some or all of the graphics cards VRAM is deducted from this 4GB allocation (DX10 doesn't have this issue). I think the folks who were having the problem had 3GB cards and used lots of add-ons, the theory seemed to be that the 3GB of VRAM was deducted from the 4GB total allocation which only left 1GB of usable VAS which resulted in the Out of Memory issues. On pure speculation alone it could be that with cards with 4GB or more this isn't a problem as maybe FSX uses all of the cards memory for VAS but I'm probably talking out of my backside.

It's probably worthwhile setting up a new thread asking the question as I know there are a number of folks who use 4GB cards and a few with Titans, whether they are using DX9 with no issues or are using DX10 to avoid issues would be worthwhile asking, and a seperate theread would probably attract some useful debates and be useful for others in the same position.

I just raised the point because if I were considering a 4GB card it's something I would want to look into before spending out the money.

1 more question....  a higher resolution with a titan gpu, will this affect the cpu? Reason is I really would like 27" screen, and think of buying I7-4770K hawsell and a titan. But I want my sim with high clouds and addons running smooth.....

FSX is CPU limited anyhow, I can't see how a Titan and 27" screen are going to bottleneck your system in any way.

I got the ASUS VG278HE a few days ago.

Tech Specs:

27"

1920x1080

144HZ

2ms

3D

Its a really neat monitor, worth the money in my opinion. I have also looked at various Samsung monitors, they just didn't have the specific specs I was looking for and / or were too pricey for what they had to offer.

You really notice the 144hz when moving the mouse around the desktop and playing games in intense action. Its a massive improvement coming from a 22" Samsung BW2232 1680x1050 @60hz.

The ASUS VG278HE has many different picture settings by a touch of a button on the monitor. The various mods consist of: Standard, Scenery, SGRB, Game, Theatre.

I have not yet tried the 3D vision as you have to buy the glasses and receiver separately, that has to be the biggest let down for me with this monitor, as you would expect there to be some glasses included seeing as though its a 3D monitor.

FSX is nothing but pure beautiful quality, great response time, obviously the monitor wont improve frames as its just a monitor and not your internal computer hardware.

I would highly recommend this monitor to anyone (I am very picky when it comes to buying stuff like this) as it is just right / perfect for anyone who wants to take full advantage of the scenery or quality a game has to offer.

Regards, Ciaran.

I would highly recommend that if you are going for a native computer monitor running at 2560x1600 res with a 27" display, that you reconsider. By moving to a 30" Dell you would really be taking advantage of the 2560x1600 resolution. The biggest screen available with such a high resolution. I've been running with such a beast for the past 18 months and it has been the best purchase I have made for my rig. Simply an awesome experience! As for a hit on CPU resources, sure, there is likely to be a hit, but if you're going to be running the kind of CPU you are talking about, then the hit is likely to be minimal, about 10-15% compared with a monitor running at 1920x1200.
