AOTD for 4/9/13...Mokuaikaua

Recommended Posts

For what it’s worth, this is my latest findings. I saved my AppData file prior to reloading my OS. Comparing the old Aerocache file to the new one, the only difference between them was the new one did not have a preview and thumb for "Curvature of the Earth". So I believe the Aerocache file contains all the aerocaches that could be collected, which would mean that the only way a person could come up with 350 collected Aerocaches would be by having collected Curvature of the Earth.

My best to all.

In light of the discussion here, I made a utility that parses the Aerocache page on the Flight website and outputs a text file with all the data. Here's the output from today.

Looking at the output, it's evident that not all Aerocaches are displayed on the site (including the infamous "Curvature of the Earth"), but hopefully the data can help reconcile some of your lists.

There was a question about Aerocaches on the Microsoft Flight facebook page a few weeks ago. The answer by the MS Flight supporter contained the following quote "Our database of aerocaches shows there are 351 unique aerocaches, but one or two of these have never been active due to some technical issues."

This might explain the confusion about the total number of aerocaches. I'm still way off even reaching 200, doubt I'll make 300+ before the serves are being switched off :-)

Hi Folks

As I'd posted, my list is "a WIP, and not definitive".

-----------------------------------------------------------------
J.R. -
Cheers for identifying 'Mohihi Falls'.     :drinks:

My F/U,

as 'Mohihi Falls' is included in each of -
my spreadsheet 'daily', the extracted source data, my comparator table,
and also in my original posted list, (20140227).

Not sure how you're determining 'Mohini' to be "permanent Aerocache # 6".
Please explain.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I do not understand the ones listed as (DUPLICATE NAME).
I have no aerocaches with the same name.

You definitely do,

By your posted screenie,
you've certainly collected at least 2 of those.

Probably, like most of us,
when you'd recognised an AotD's name/location, you'd ignored it.

What you mean is,
you didn't see any duplicates
when you'd looked at FLIGHT's in-game "All Aerocaches" listing.

Try counting that displayed list.

Its substantially short of 350,
as it only includes the freeflight & AotDs since made permanent.

None of the mentioned duplicates, have been converted into a 'permanent'.

Unless you check in-game every day,
and specifically look at the in-game AotD panel,
to view whether the 'already collected' tick-box is checked,
then you'd never realise, that an AotD was potentially an uncollected duplicate.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Regarding the numbers of 'image pairs' -

Having an 'image pair' in your profile
i.e. %AppData%\Local\Microsoft\Flight\Shared\UI\Aerocaches\
does not mean you have earned/collected that aerocache.

It only means FLIGHT downloaded the aerocache on the 'requested day'.

The number of your earned/collected aerocaches
is displayed in the various profile extractions.
e.g. As you'd ringed on your screenie.

As previously -
The only visible indication, (that I know of),
for the total number of potentially available aerocaches
is the figure displayed in-game,
when viewing another player's profile, whilst in multi-player, (350).

-----------------------------------------------------------------
For images in %AppData%\Local\Microsoft\Flight\Shared\UI\Aerocaches\,
their filename matches the aerocache's GUID.

If not already downloaded,
these 'image pairs' for an AotD
are only downloaded by FLIGHT on that 'requested day',
(the day/time being taken from from the user's PC's system clock),
when the user first clicks on the in-game aerocache panel.

i.e.
You don't need to re-launch FLIGHT,
but only change the PC's system clock,
then revisit the in-game AotD panel.
If the date is 'in the past', the displayed AotD is not collectable.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Back to your question -

I have 702, which corresponds to 351 aerocaches.
350 'active', and 1 'retracted', (CotE GUID 8e9a0765-d504-4783-8535-a5c5b0dbb249).

If you only have 698 in the folder
that means you've entirely missed 2 AotD events,
(CotE being a permanent, is already included in your 698).

-----------------------------------------------------------------
To trace those AotDs you'd missed -
I'd first check against those 4 off AotD duplicates of Freeflight aerocaches.
That's the GUIDs for list items - 71, 79, 167, & 337.

Open 'Windows Explorer', (file manager),
and for each of those non-freeflight duplicate,
paste the first 8 chars of their GUID,
into the 'Search Box'.

If you've got all 4 of those present in your folder -
Open a 'command window' in that folder,
and type in the following line -
dir /b > dirlist.txt

Now look in that folder,
then press F5, and you'll see a file named dirlist.txt

Either post dirlist.txt as an attachment,
or include its contents, in your reply here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Duplicate Names -

As previously -
It looks like there were 6 off 'identically named' aerocaches. -

- 4 off obvious ones, having entirely different descriptions and GUIDs.

These definitively exist, (see attached zip of their previews).

"70","Freeflight","Hakalau Bridge","Bridge on the coast north of Hilo. (GUID b47d12c6-e2bb-498f-aad2-a54f2fdd0665)"
"71","2012-06-05","Hakalau Bridge","Under the Hakalau Bridge. (GUID f4cba4ad-08e7-47e5-81eb-e5bd888b0138)"

"78","Freeflight","Hanakoa Falls","On Kauai, Hawaii. (GUID 8a158de5-e756-4416-a0ad-94095811b2da)"
"79","2013-04-12","Hanakoa Falls","An impressive falls nestled within one of the cathedral-like wrinkles in the mountains backing Hanakoa valley at the half way point of the Kalalau trail. (GUID 0d038159-e409-4912-b9ea-9fd227a0887d)"

"166","2012-03-24","Kilauea Lighthouse","Lighthouse on the north shore of Kauai. (XP 3000) (GUID a07f010f-e5ba-48b6-af5a-d493422f1af5)"
"167","2013-04-23","Kilauea Lighthouse","Most northern point, on the island of Kauai. Submitted by community member Air 1. (XP 2000) (GUID d5c3ea44-f231-474e-8cbd-de9235709236)"

"336","Freeflight","Waipoo Falls","On Kauai, Hawaii. (GUID 7bd3815c-da9e-4159-aae1-097a1ec40d7f)"
"337","2013-05-05","Waipoo Falls","A two-tier waterfall that drops nearly 800 feet in Waimea Canyon. (GUID 85781a2d-8adc-40c7-aa1a-0a5337b09dff)"

- 2 off suspect AotD duplicates of Freeflight defaults.
Note I'd said SUSPECT, (as in unconfirmed).

Both the following are Freeflight aerocaches,
yet AotDs with these names were posted multiple times.
I hadn't checked their GUIDs as I'd recognised their names,
and assumed they were just the 'system fallback'.
i.e.
Displayed when the database had no posted AotD for that date.

"67","Freeflight","Haena Beach","On Kauai, Hawaii. (GUID 5a6e4922-371c-453d-8753-00a0f4d41291"
"68","2012-07-10","Haena Beach","On Kauai, Hawaii. (GUID xxxxxxxxx)"

"346","Freeflight","Windy Ridge","Wind farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. (GUID 6cde0d2c-cc97-4476-b42c-043ddd5afe4b)"
"347","2012-03-25","Windy Ridge","Wind farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. (GUID xxxxxxxx)"

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I'll leave you with one last thought -

Of course its entirely possible
that there's been more than 351 aerocaches,
as at one time,
multi-player profiles displayed the total available aerocaches as 352.

i.e. We've all potentially missed at least one AotD.

It is to my knowledge THE FIRST profile posted with all the AoTD

Congratulations OO - JML after a beautiful collection of liveries already posted

here  is a fine example of courage and tenacity.

Hi Folks

Orion -

Cheers for your extraction.

Like the in-game aerocache listing,

the online version, similarly only displays the freeflight, and those 'made permanent', aerocaches.

Ah, well, that would make sense. What happened to Curvature of the Earth, though? I recall it being a non-AOTD Aerocache.

Hi Folks

JML -

Cheers for posting.

Do you perchance have a listing of your collected aerocaches ?

Had you collected 'CotE' ?

'Consecutive Spins' & 'Highest Altitude' would infer thats highly probable.

I'd forgotten about the in-game versus web collected AotD discrepancy.

Your brain must be soup

after experiencing those G's.

I'll have to revisit McKinley,

as my landing elevation was 14 ft less than yours.

Hy all

The method was described somewhere but...

With the first version of flight, some had, when it caused a flat spin took altitude instead of falling. We had let him climb into space and then get out of spin and try to direct the aircraft in his fall to the aerocache. It regained a little maneuverability around 75000 feet

Orion -

Apologies for the quote.

This board's crap software

kept insisting on appending my reply to you,

to my previously posted reply to JML.

CotE was a freeflight aerocache.

Post MS's ceasing FLIGHT's development,

MS announced they'd be retracting CotE.

IIRC this was performed back in 2012.

There were posts immediately after the event,

by users complaining of having their collected aerocache count decremented.

Sorry Paul, I misunderstood the list in post #27. I thought that this was your own list. I agree with what you stated, as there were duplicates in my list. With the posts from Orion and OO-JML whose information I saved, it should help to straighten my list out.

These are the permanent Aerocache, and the one I have circled in red is the 6th one from the bottom.

Thanks to all, and to all a good day!

Hi Folks

OO-JML -

Cheers for your excellent listing.

Coords much appreciated.

J.R. -

My fault for not being clearer.

I was referring to 'Mohili' being included in my simpler previous list in post 13, (page 1).

Detailed list in post 27 is also mine.

Cheers for #6 explanation.
