A shift away from flight yokes?

Recommended Posts

Guest Pardue802

I've been considering replacing my very old CH Products flight yoke with a more up to date USB version, but now I'm considering moving to a joystick. After looking around and giving it a little bit of notice, I'm seeing that many aircraft are now moving over to having joystick-type configurations instead of flight yokes. So, what I once considered making my flights more relistic may eventually take realism away. For instance, take a look at the flight decks of both the Cirrus SR-20 and SR-22 (http://cirrusdesign.com/aircraft/gallery/). Here's a general aviation aircraft which does not have a flight yoke. Also, for commercial aircraft, look at the Airbus A380 (http://airbus.dyndns.info/A380/Flight_Deck.htm). Same thing, sticks mounted on the left side of the pilot and to the right side of the copilot. What's your thoughts on it?Kenneth

Get both. It seems to me the majority of aircraft still use the yoke design, with the exception of the examples you provided, plus all the acrobatic planes and a bunch of the older models. So I guess it depends on what you fly most often, but I'm very happy having both. When I'm in the mood for a little dogfighting or putting on a show, I unplug the yoke and grab the stick. But otherwise, and assuming you don't want to buy both, I'd stick (no pun) with the yoke.

>eventually take realism away.'Eventually' is the right word. But for now (and probably for another 20 years) the great majority of General Aviation planes will have yokes. Yes, Airbus uses side-sticks but what's new here ? It has been like this for the last 10 years.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg
