Payware Promo Videos - Poll of Sorts

Featured Replies

I just finished watching the 727 promo vid from Dreamfleet, and must say it looks nice. I noticed the price and purchase link are about to be made active! Anyhow, after seeing a few of these wonderful videos, like the two Level-D 767 vids, I got to thinking. Some of them are only music and the aircraft sound is left out or only added to a small portion of the video. I would like to be able to see these with the aircraft sounds, such as GPWS, Traffic warnings, engine sounds, ect...Just seems strange to watch but not hear anything but music. Hearing the sounds really gives more of a feel to the add-on.Anyone else agree?

I do, Chris, but I also feel that given a 30-day money back guarantee, and the fact that adding such a plethora of sounds would also involve extensive sound editing, along with the video editing, along with the already costly bandwidth costs of providing the video make this perhaps asking a bit much. In some cases it could easily double the video's production time.I feel at this stage, most of the well known developers such as us, F1, PSS, PMDG, etc. are already pretty well known for realistic sounds, and as development time does nothing but increase in order to meet ever-increasing demands for realism, taking even more time to create more extensive video productions does nothing but lengthen the development time of the product, and the weariness of the already exhausted development team.Always remember that the FS payware add-on market is a tiny one. We do not have, nor can we afford dedicated "media departments" that handle this. We all wear many hats. In fact, the 727 team was so busy that there would not have been a video at all, had it not been for the kind work of one of our beta testers.Ultimately, the best video is the product itself, and with a 30-day money back guarantee, that is hard to beat! :-)Of course, if you would like to do such video productions for us in the future, please contact me at the DF forum, and that is not a joke either! I'm sure we could work something out for your services.Regards,http://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...R_FORUM_LOU.jpg

If I was considering a purchase such as an aircraft, I too would want to hear the engines, examples of the special features in action, things I would not be able to determine by simply looking at some screenshots. I think as time goes on more and more professional flightsim companies will realize the advantage of a good promotional video as part of there marketing "toolbox". In the past it would have been cost prohibitive but now the technology has recently caught up. Depending on the quality, the detail and the message, it can still be time consuming however. Then again, Dreamfleet is one of only a handful of companies which offer a 30 day refund, which is a homorable strategy of believing in their product strong enough to make such an offer. But I am sure you will see more of them creeping up.Marcus ThompsonMileHigh Productions

Thanks for the reponse, and from the man himself! I've never recorded a flight in these sims, my computer is just too slow to at this point, so I had no idea whether these recordings captured the sounds as well. I was under the impression when recording a flight in FS9 that it captured the sound as well.I certainly don't expect a bunch of editing for a promo video, that would be too much. Everyone already knows that DF, Flight 1, PMDG, and a few others make the best add-ons for these MSFS. I personally know whatever you guys release will sound really good and have the most realistic features possible. Just a thought I had.Looking forward to your future add-ons!

Well, of course I may be mistaken, but I believe the sound heard when we play back a Video made on our systems, is the sound from the aircraft on our system. So, a video recorded with a flight on another system, probably is not actually recording the sound, just pictures. Probably why music is added as a sound track to such video's... Saw a really elaborate film made once from a flight made in the FS, it also had music with it. When we play these video's back, we do not have the FS loaded, so the FS cant create sound to go with the video. Probably one reason those who make them, add sound, rather than just have silence. When I purchase an aircraft, I've never even seen a video of them. What matters more to me, is the reputation of the company selling it. The first addon plane I bought, was Bill Lyons Waco. That was so long ago, he has been givig it away for over a year. Yet, of all 89 aircraft I have in my Flightsim, the Red Waco is _still_ my favorite. Not only because it is great, but due to the emotional attachment. The first airplane ride I ever had, was back in 1936 in a Biplane. My Grandfather paid $1 for the ride in a Barnstormers aircraft in Brockton MA. Since then Ive been up in a Waco three times, and the last time was able to fly it. Bob

Actually, Fraps2 does quite a good job of capping videos from FS9 (even on my aged system) complete with sound - no editing at all. Many of the promo vids I've seen actually don't look a whole lot better than what I've captured using fraps so I always sort of assumed that was what was being used. I'm not sure theres enough payoff in promo vids to spend much time and money on them when for nearly nothing you can cap a vid with sound and all in about ten minutes time and with a bit of editing in movie maker make something that looks pretty good...

I too, thoroughly annoyed at times :) by vids that use music rather than a/c sound, was under the impression that your typical video capture included sound and the author opted to omit them - guess it's not so easy after all, but I certainly would prefer natural sounds.regards,Mark

Hello All,I appreciate Lou's response, but I would like to give you mine. I'm the guy who did the video. I am not a pro, not even close. My association with DF is strictly as a Beta Tester of the 727 because I was a real world pilot with a ton of hours in that aircraft. And I am honored that Paul G asked me to participate. As for the video, I have done and uploaded perhaps 4-5 total. I have watched all the 'masters' stuff and tried to emulate the best. I am sure I don't even come close to Stefans stuff at FSClips.com or 'Grovers' wonderful magic or Janey Gellings beautiful 'Pink' classics. But I try, at least, to do my best.On the subject of music verses engine sounds, well, the DF727 has the most 'authentic' sounds in cockpit and out I've yet to hear. They also have a sound configuration setup area where you can raise or lower the sounds of the engines, cockpit, flaps, and so on, and so on, to suit the 'owners' taste. This was not available in the prievious beta and I had to deal with what I had to work with, however, I still would have chosen the music. It was MY video and MY choice. I have tried videos with just engine sounds and to me, they were boring. Mixing music and FS sounds comes out garbled, (see my B52 Video at flightsim.com if you don't believe me), Or I just don't know enough about it to do it properly and it just didn't seem professional enough for this great product. As for the music I chose, well, I wanted it to be different, and set the mood of what I believed to be a classic. My choice, my video. After I made the video, I let Paul G see it, he liked it and asked if they could use it. I was thrilled. To think that my small effort, (actually it was about a 30 hour effort) would represent DF as a preview really got my juices running. In truth, Like Lou mentioned, there probably wouldn't have been one if I hadn't of done one, because the DF team was more interested in getting it right, (the aircraft), then adding gingerbread to sell it.My original intention was to wait until the NDA was lifted and then post it on AVSIM and Flightsim.com as MY effort. So good or bad, I'm the guy who gets the heat or praise. This aircraft has been a very long time coming because the team at DF has wanted it to be the best they could offer for FS within FS's limitations, (and trust me, there are many limitations they have overcome) at a reasonable price. I am not speaking for DF, just myself and my observations of this talented group of people. In my opinion, they have created a classic and having flown everyone eles's version, and having flown the real thing more times than I care to count, it is my belief that they have done an excellent job, which STILL isn't finished, but should be shortly. And it is a bargin at twice the price if you really knew all the man hours, effort, tears and heartache which has gone into its creation for your FS enjoyment. On the video, well, again, I'm the guy, good or bad which will take the heat or praise . . . and I'm also the guy who will most likely make another, with music which I feel meets the mood of what I am doing. It's called artistic license . . . and I choose to use it.Thanks everyone for your comments, positive or negitive, I take critism very well, and just wanted it directed at the right place.Best to allClay http://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...ers/Dopke01.jpgClayton T. 727 engines aren't that loud anyway, you can't even hear them unless you are standing right behind the plane :-lol

Well Clay, I looked at the video last night and thought it was stunning. If the product itself is as professional as your video of it, it's bound to be a success! (Although I felt your choice of music didn't suit the subject, but as you said, 'your film - your choice'.)Everyone should also bear in mind that videos of forthcoming add-ons are rare to say the least, and 99 times out of 100, all we have are screenshots and promotional 'hype' (some of which is sometimes misleading, mentioning no publishers of course...)So a film which shows a few of the features as this one does can only help in making good buying decisions. Real shame more don't follow Clay's (and Dreamfleet's ) lead.Toni.

Oh yeah, I hope my comment wasn't misconstrued by anyone as being critical of the promo vid as provided. I don't mind either way - music or sound effects are fine by me. I was just a bit surprised to discover that developers were devoting serious resources to making the promo vids at all (not that the vid in question isn't a quality piece of work)...

Not a problem and I appreciate the point made. And I thank you for the nice comment on its quality.Best to you and yours,Clay
