OT: Picture I took tonight of the Aspen fire in Tucson....

Recommended Posts

I took this photo at about 11:30 tonight from a major road about 5 miles to the north of where I live. To give you some sense of scale - that rock formation at the upper left is an entire 7000 ft mountain called Rattlesnake Peak. Those flames are easily 75-200ft high in places and we could see them moving very clearly. Where the two mountains meet in the middle there is Sabino Canyon, a popular recreation area that is gonna get utterly destroyed by this. The foliage sticking up on the right is in the foreground. This picture is completely unaltered except for the resizing and a sharpen filter. It looked even more impressive than this in person - you can't possibly grasp how huge this is from a photo. I've never seen anything like it... If you're wondering, the picture is a Canon EOS D60, 28-135mm wide angle lens, and the pic was taken in apperature priority mode (f5.6), ISO100 - 9 second exposure lying on the roof of a jeep taking it. Your picture reminds me very much of the view we had of a fire just east of TUS last October. My wife and I were riding in a Delta 757 arriving on an early evening flight and in passing close to the mountains the view was awesome. That fire was obviously much less destructive and threatening. Hope you and yours stay safe.Joe L.Philadelphia Hub ManagerCarolina OperationsVN7 Network

I remember when I lived on Fresno we had fires like that every year. The Fresno Airport looked like an old air museum from all the USFS and CDF aircraft that parked at the Air Attack base next to the United Express hangar.

Jeff, you lived in Fresno? I live there now. I see a Grumman S-2 Tracker which I think belongs to the CDF, and there is another aircraft, right now I can't come up with it... its twin engined, with a a twin boom tail config, and it has somewhat of a fighter-jet-looking canopy quite far forward on the fuselage. The Tracker is LOUD! I watched it go right over my head on a short final to 29R, on Clovis, I think. You know where the approach lights go right across Clovis? It's very cool.

Todd,Yep..I know the aircraft you're talking about, just can't think of the name right now..the appr. lights for 29R go right over Clovis Ave..I also see we have airstairs now at the new terminal. The S2's I think were converted to turbo props but there used to be 1 or 2 with the old radial engines..they were very loud. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I used to park my car on the dust, across the road from the airport, and watch them go right over on short final. The S2 that I've seen is a radial... I have not seen a turboprop yet. Also, where you get on Highway 41 on Ashlan, there is a Derrel's Storage place where my parents have a storage shed, and that is right below the usual departure path, so while we work there, every once in a while I hear a plane departing, and I look up and see planes go right over on departure. The other day, I saw either an F-5 Freedom Fighter or an F-20 Tigershark. They are the same thing, but one has two engines and one has a single engine. Very cool.

Todd,Yeah I remember that storage place...right next to Blackbeards, or close to it, right? I used to work for United Express back in the 1980's in the dispatch center. I flew all over the place when I worked for the airlines..I also flew many a Cessna out of Mazzie's back then also. Even flew into LAX in a cessna one time..we took (bug smashed) some wrench benders in a Cessna we rented down there one time when we ran out of airplanes (flights). We had loads of fun. My dad still lives there..he is the Telephone Services Manager for the County. He recently switched jobs though and is in the admin building now (moved from the Dell Web).Fresno and the entire Central Valley (KBFL, KMER, etc...) is on our list of sceneries to do after we get done with EGKK, KMCI, and somewhere in the northwest. hehe. We've already filmed a ton out here in KC (KMCI), where I live..I'll prob. be out in Fresno this summer again and might take some video while I'm there.Take care.

Buddy, just letting you know, you have NO need for jackets or ANY type of clothing that is meant to retain body heat when you come out here, lol. We're getting 104-107 every day here. Maybe perhaps we can hook up for coffee and a chat sometime? I don't know if youre intending on doing any flying or whatnot... what exactly are you filming?

Yeah, it's hot here as well, Todd. We plan on filming airside, landside, and general city shots throughout the Central Valley. This project is a little ways off though...depends on how quick we get the rest of our sceneries done first.Maybe I'll have time to look you up..thanks for the offer.
