I have a relatively high end PC. i7 3770k, 16gb RAM, GTX titan gfx card. When running fsx on highest settings with ORBX England 2.0 i get horrible frame rate, under 10 fps. It will also crash to desktop and say my computer has run out of memory. Anybody know why this would be? I would have thought my set up would be able to handle it.

Many Thanks

Many members here at AVSIM are having OOM issues.  The most common cause is have LOD_Radius above the fsx default max (4.5) coupled with a high Texture_Max_Load setting.

Best regards,

Jim

In a nutshell...

Turn your sliders down.

Max scenery in Orbx land is recipie for OOM.

OOM isn't your physical RAM, it's your virtual address space - and the limit inFSX is 4 GB. It's only 4 because FSX is a 32bit application. Also keep LOD at 5.5 or below (when in Orbx areas) and keep scenery one notch down from max.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Silly silly question, but what is OOM and LOD? trying to find the abbreviations but can't. Very new to this!

OOM = "out of memory"

LOD = "level of detail"

You will find this settings in fsx.cfg. Fsx.cfg is located in "C:\Users\"your PC name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX."

For OOM errors:

 - Apply this microsoft fix for OOM errors http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947246

 - I have limit TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD to 2048. More than default 1024 is required for some high quality addons(NGX virtual cockpit for example). But more than 2048 is looking for trouble. This settings will reset to default every time you change something in FSX display option. I use FSDT addon manager to keep it at 2048

 - LOD_RADIUS i leave this on default settings. Increasing this you can get OOM's

 - If you use REX, choose DXT optimized textures where is posible, from REX settings

 - don't set screen resolution too high

 - in fsx scenery library, disable all scenery that is not used for your current flight(if you fly in USA, disable Asia, Europe, Australia etc)and all payware sceneries

For FSX performance:

 - Use Nick N. gude for windows 7 tuning, you have there one section for fsx and simconnect corect instalation too

 - Use Word Not Allowed's guide for fsx settings, like @@Trans_27 Pilot Chase already said above

Cheers
