FSX crashes, no clues in Event Viewer

Recommended Posts

I just recently started using FSX, despite the fact that I have owned it for years.  I have the Gold Edition that includes the Deluxe Edition and the Acceleration Pack.  I have only made one flight and since then, FSX will crash at random points.  And with every crash, it is recording the following in the Event Viewer, but there is nothing there to go on to give clues why it is crashing.

I have read various posts but nothing has helped so far.  My .cfg file has the HIGHMEMFIX=1 entry, I have replaced the UIAutomationCore.dll file.  Other than my AI models and textures and associated flightplans, the only other addon is FSDreamteam KORD for FSX, which I downloaded from their site.  Crashes appear at random points, not at ORD though.  When I pushback from the gate, during taxi, in flight and so on.  The last crash happend as I was holding short waiting for traffic to land.  I do have a couple of addon freeware aircraft (Posky E145 and CR7) installed, but the crashes will happen with the default aircraft as well as the two Posky models.  FSX will just say it was not responding and crash to the desktop.  I know the Event Viewer log is not much to go on, but has anybody come across that before?

3.4GHz Intel i7 CPU

Win7 64bit

16GB RAM

2 AMD Radeon HD 6700 cards with 1GB RAM each

FSX is installed onto it's own partition on a 2nd hard drive.

Nothing is overclocked, either CPU or GPUs.

I have replaced the UIAutomationCore.dll file.

How do you mean replaced? The system UIAutomationCore.dll should not be replaced, you need just to add vista UIAutomationCore.dll to your main FSX folder. Here is the corect version of UIAutomationCore.dll https://dl.dropbox.com/u/31158446/Blog/UIAutomationCore.rar

Just put UIAutomationCore.dll in FSX main folder and that's all, don't try to add it to the registry, that is all.

But if you have replaced system UIAutomationCore.dll, you need to repair that. Use windows repair function, try to download original Windows 7 UIAutomationCore.dll and put it back. And after that download this vista version and put it in FSX folder

Yeah I meant copying the .dll file into my FSX folder, sorry.  The other UIAutomationCore.dll on my system have not been touched.

I have run a scan on my FSX folder using FS AI Texture Checker from Erez Werber, the creator of the FAIB B737 models, and have found quite a few errors with textures in the wrong format, which surprised me.  I am cleaning up the textures now and will try another flight after I finish.

Ok. Now i see there are too many threads with fsx CTD today, it may be FSUIPC related, i don't know if you saw this: http://forum.avsim.net/page/index.html/_/pri-news/fsuipc-requires-replacing-on-all-user-systems-r1305

So, this is what I would do:

1. go here and replace your FSUIPC with the new version http://forum.simflight.com/topic/66139-updated-modules/

2. Check again that you have right version of UIAutomationCore.dll (i insist with this becouse many simmers have wrong version, or they tried to add this to registry which will cause CTD's :) )  I posted a link above with the right version. Should be version 6.0 5840.16386

3. I copied from another forum to safe time, it's important for fsx menu crashes:

"Just follow this steps (even if the seem weird to you)

1) Go inside your FSX root folder, right click on the fsx.exe file and select properties.
2) Now go to the Compatibility tab and select the option that says: 'Change settings for all users'
3) Make sure ONLY the following options are checked:
- Disable visual themes
- Disable desktop composition
- Run this program as an administrator
4) Press Apply, Apply, OK Until you clear all windows
5) Now, go to the control Panel
6) Select the icon called 'Personalization'
7) On the left pane, you'll see the option 'Change mouse pointers' click on it.
Now, in the mouse properties window, select the 'Pointers' tab
9) Set (None) under the pulldown where you see 'Scheme' and press apply"

Do you have Sweetfx or ENBseries installed in fsx?

I do not have those installed.

Should be version 6.0 5840.16386

That is the version of the UAAutomationCore.dll file that I have in my FSX folder.  Also I did not have FSUIPC installed, so I installed it.

Last night I finished fixing my textures that had missing or corrupt Alpha textures.  There were a lot of them.  Was too late to try to fly last night, so I'll give it another shot to see if that fixed it.

Well, still crashing even after verifying the correct .DLL file is in the FSX folder and fixing all of my texture issues.  Was on a short 200 or so mile flight last night between KEVV-KORD and as soon as I got landing clearance into KORD, it crashed to desktop with the same error message that I provided in the original post.  I'll try another flight, to another airport.  Maybe FS Dreamteam KORD is causing the problem, however when I flew out of there a few weeks ago (my last good flight), I had no issues at all.

The error message in the OP indicates you have high FSX/display driver settings.  You have a lot of RAM but fsx can only use up to 4GB.  So, if you try to push it above that, FSX will crash.  FSDT KORD will bring your system down to its knees if your settings are set too high, especially with any weather.  I know....  The module that caused the crash is unknown and I have seen the BEX/StackHash crash start showing up soon after these unknown module crashes.  Here's a link in this forum to a possible fix to ALL BEX/StackHash CTD's - http://forum.avsim.n...-errorscrashes/.  It has worked for some.  FSX needs DEP enabled so it is impossible to stop it but evidently the info in the link does it and FSX continues to run.  Run this program only if you see the BEX/StackHash crash.  As I recall you can also remove the "fix" if it does not work.

You should download and run AppCrashView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html and copy and paste the latest crash here.

I would also remove the uiautomationcore.dll from your main FSX directory.  Since you did get a crash, the Vista version obviously did not stop it.  The uiautomationcore.dll only fixes one problem and that's a crash if you repeatedly hit the FSX menu bar.  I personally cannot replicate this crash and have tried several times to crash my FSX by repeatedly clicking on the fsx menu bar.  No joy...  I really think the menu bar crash is caused by high settings where fsx is running short of memory by the constant hitting on the menu bar.  I do not have the uiautomationcore.dll in my main fsx folder and never have.  The uiautomationcore.dll belongs with the Microsoft.net framework packages and, developers of FSX and FSX addons require dotnet versions 1.1 thru 4.5 installed to make their products work properly.  I believe the Vista version of dotnet is 1.1 as it is installed with FSX/Acceleration.

Best regards,

Jim

@firehawk44 Thanks for the info, I will look into it.  Last night as I watched the Chicago Blackhawks playoff hockey game, I loaded up FSX and flew a short flight from KEVV to KDTW and had no CTDs.  So that is good news, I am happy that my sim is not completely ruined and I can fly it.  Hopefully the info in your post will help out more.

Last night as I watched the Chicago Blackhawks playoff hockey game

Congrats on the Blackhawk win.  Use to be a rabid fan back in the late 60's, early 70's but now in the Wash DC area and watch the Capitals.  But, the Blackhawks are my second favorite team.

Best regards,

Jim

Got another crash, this time as it was loading the flight that I created. Here is the AppCrashView data.  DEP is off and the .dll file is still in my FSX folder.

You received a BEX/StackHash CTD.  You stated you disabled DEP.  Did you do that through the link I provided in Post #8?  If so, you should reverse that and enable DEP.  Microsoft will not allow you to disable DEP manually in Windows as Windows states FSX cannot be disabled.  The link I provided was a shot in the dark as it has worked for some (or so they say).  When I got a BEX/StackHash crash, I reinstalled FSX and that has fixed my problem.  In laymen's terms, a StackHash is a crash where something is stuck in memory http://tdistler.com/2009/04/10/stackhash-and-application-crashes-on-windows.

There is nothing in your crash report that indicates a problem with installation of FSX or the Microsoft Visuals required to run FSX.  The last loaded module before the crash (shdocvw.dll) is used by Windows for basic file and networking operations.  You do have the Bonjour service installed and that is used by Apple for iTunes and I think Adobe uses it too.  It has caused problems with FSX but not necessarily creating a StackHash error.  It's running in the background and it might be trying to get to the Apple server to look for updates while your program is loading.

Best regards,

Jim

I did read through the links you provided. And I just recently tried a few more things.  I removed the UIAutomationCore.dll file from the FSX folder, still crashed.  I uninstalled Bonjour and rebooted, still crashed.  I enabled DEP and it still crashed.  With every crash it was as the flight loaded and towards the end of the loading process when it said it was loading the AI traffic.  So I disabled all AI traffic (plans, boats and airport vehicles) and loaded a flight and it didn't crash.  So now somewhere I have a corrupt AI traffic file...and I have a long process to figure out what might be corrupt.

Glad you were able to find the problem.  Should be easy enough to reinstall your AI program.  I still do not understand how this could have caused a BEX/StackHash error/CTD unless one of your AI flights or aircraft are stuck in memory somewhere.  As I stated, the uiautomationcore.dll only fixes one problem - menu crashes.  Nothing else as you can attest.  The Bonjour service has caused crashes with other games.

Best regards,

Jim

I do not use an AI program, I use flightplans from Alpha India and others, all manually installed using AIFP.  Since my last crash happened at KDTW on Sunday at 12:30, I am using that as my test.  After moving my traffic bgl file for an airline back into the scenery folder, I am loading FSX with those settings.  So far so good, no crashes yet.  I am following Wikipedia's entry for KDTW to add back in the traffic, made it as far down the list as Royal Jordanian.  If I get all my commercial and cargo carriers added in OK, then it might be any of my packages for general aviation.  This is slow going, with the nicer weather (finally!) and playoff hockey, wanting to sit in front of my PC and work on this is not a priority. :)
