Simple way to get default airport buildings back to stock KBOS?

Featured Replies

Don't know why but they're missing from this location (just have a bunch of jetways but no buildings attached) and some others generally in this part of the FSX world.  Anyone know how I can get them back into my scenery folder or wherever they belong off of the FSX install CD?  I have lots of scenery addons and I'm sure something was killed when I overwrote a back up installation folder at some point in my 5 y/o FSX installation.

Thanks in advance.

Noel

If you did not backup your FSX installation, you can reinsert the FSX disk and select "Repair" option.  Don't forget to 'repair' Acceleration too if installed or SP1 and SP2 if Acceleration is not installed.  In FS9 and earlier versions of FS you could go on the CD and copy the files you needed but not so in FSX.  This is why a lot of flight simmers backup their installation of FSX before making modifications.  But backing up your installation in this case probably would not have helped as it is not known what files would be needed to get KBOS buildings back.  Another suggestion might be to install a freeware or payware version of KBOS.

Thank you Jim--much appreciated ;o)

Do you know, is there a way to identify which exact file would reinstall the original KBOS area?  I may have a back up of the original scenery folder I'll have to look it's been so long since I've reinstalled anything.   Do you know what all the 'Repair' option will do?  I have many add on sceneries and don't want to mess anything else up at this point.  I could look for a new KBOS that might be simplest and least risky.  I"m loathe to mess anything up so that my next install will be when I do my upcoming new build.

This sounds very much like theres an exclude file in another addon scenery causing this - and it doesn't have to be an addon that's anywhere near Boston-it could wierdly be halfway around the world!

Best solution is long winded but would save a full reinstall and is "tried and tested" for this sort of problem!!

Firstly disable all addon scenery in the scenery library within FSX...go to KBOS and test.

If the buildings are back...that will confirm that there is a file within your addons causing the disappearance.

Next re-enable half of your addon scenery's....go back to KBOS and test. If the buildings are still there, you know that the addons you just re-enabled are not the cause.

Re-enable another half of what you got left and test again and so on and so on until the buildings disappear.

When you notice that the buildings disappear, it should be easier to pinpoint the culprit by being aware of what addons you have just re-enabled in the sim.

Hope that makes sense...and good luck!!

Dave, which graphics settings are you interested in seeing?  Not sure where that would come into play since I have buildings present everywhere else including some very busy areas like KJFK, KORD, etc.

Which points to a rogue exclude file in another scenery.

If it was something terminal with your FSX overall, you wouldn't see any buildings anywhere and the problem would not be so "local" to KBOS.

Have you got, or ever had any KBOS addons...full on scenery or even an Afcad/AF2 file at all??

There is a Boston.bgl file in the \NAME folder, dated 08/21/06. The airport and objects files for the area are in folder \0302, file 2916. These are both dated 08/31/06.

I'd also go with the choice of stripping the Scenery.cfg file down to stock and see if the objects appear. If they do, start adding back 1/2 of the add on scenery until you narrow down the problem.

If you did not backup your FSX installation, you can reinsert the FSX disk and select "Repair" option.  Don't forget to 'repair' Acceleration too if installed or SP1 and SP2 if Acceleration is not installed.

I did a repair once and had no issues.  A few years ago though.  It will replace your FSX.cfg and maybe the dll.xml file.  I would save the folder containing the FSX.cfg so you can return your current settings once the repair is complete.  I do not know the name of the file containing the Boston scenery.  You might want to save your 'working' scenery.cfg too.  I don't think it overwrites it but just to be on the safe side.

Best regards,

Jim

Whether you see buildings or other objects in scenery is dependent on what level of detail the scenery/AFCAD author set them to, so just because you see buildings at one location doesn't mean that you'll see them elsewhere.

Something tells me that you've been adding scenery simply by dumping it in the Addon Scenery/scenery folder. It's the worst possible way to add scenery to FSX.

Let's get you fixed first, then I'll show you how to properly format scenery yourself, which will not only prevent such issues, it will allow you to:

1. Know with a glance precisely what scenery you have,

2. What airport or area the scenery is for,

3. When the scenery was created by the author and what updates are applied, - so you'll know instantly if some update applies or if there is a newer scenery you should switch to.

I've maintain a Group Scenery Library with over 55GB of customized, up to date freeware scenery, and this system has never failed any of the group members.

Anyway, lets get to work. If I can't fix it via the forum, I'll be happy to provide remote desktop support and correct the problem for you (if it's correctable, one never knows what someone has done or what they're getting into). I've provided online, remote desktop support for FSX to at least one hundred people over the past 4 years alone, custom system tuning, shared cockpit grooming, and resolving issues. I normally only do this for OVPA members, but I'll do this only if it's absolutely necessary - the only requirement is that you demonstrate that you have a decent anti-virus program installed and up to date (if you need one I can recommend a few freeware ones) and that you've performed a deep level scan within the last week (screen shot suffices). We're not there yet, and I'd prefer to fix via the forum if possible.

Screen shots we need right now: All of your FSX graphics related settings (Display and Scenery screens), and of your Addon Scenery/Scenery folder.

Oh, PLEASE do not REINSTALL anything. I'd prefer if you didn't remove anything else as well. Let's figure out what the problem is, so we can fix it.

I had one freeware scenery I installed many moons ago and it did cause problems but I don't recall how I installed it--maybe 4 years ago.  It was of KSFO.   Outside of that, I have no other freeware scenery that I can recall.  Thank you kindly for this support offer!  I'll send screen captures hopefully tonight after work.  I also believe some other airports are missing buildings now that I recall--I think it was one of the airports in Montreal, so interestingly, both airports were in a similar part of the world.  I've flown out of Portland, Maine but the airport there was fine.

Dave, you have gone above and beyond what I would have expected from anyone, and yet I haven't responded.  Sorry but I should have emphasized 'Simple way...'  Right now I'm on the cusp of putting together a new system and so don't want to bother w/ detailed troubleshooting for this issue.  Thank you so much for the kind and in depth offer however I'm going to hold off for now since all's well elsewhere in the FSX world for me til the new build comes.

Cheers,

Noel

Noel,

No problem my friend. I know what it's like to struggle with issues and though there are many who offer sincere advice, it's difficult to know who to listen to or who has the complete picture.  I must have fixed or groomed well over 100 FSX installations with all of the most popular add-ons. Given that, I've seen a good portion of what causes people grief.

If and when you need assistance, please feel free to PM me or reach my on the OVPA website for faster response.

Thanks Dave that is very kind of you.   I have quite a few addons but when it comes down to trouble shooting problems I have to admit I'm pretty spoiled as it's all worked quite well but fickle as it is it is nice to have folks around willing to help when it comes time.

Take care and Enjoy ;o)
