Which type of cable needed to rewire cannibalized joystick?

Recommended Posts

Dear builders,

for a yoke project, I have cannibalized a standard USB joystick with standard potentiometers etc. I am now looking for cables to rewire the whole thing, because the yoke is - of course - larger than the joystick, so the distance between the potentiometers and the USB plug will be longer.

If I go to the local electronics store and show them the joystick, telling them I need more of "this" (pointing to the joysticks cables), they look at me and don't understand. I have to say that I am not an electronics specialist plus I am living in a very remote corner of the world on a small island where you usually buy ready made goods, and not much is being constructed from scratch.

So I am looking at mail order as my last resort. Can somebody who knows electronics better than I do give me the definition of which kind of wire will be needed, so I can try to find it online?

Best regards,

Holger

You can buy a long USB extension cable, chop end you do not want to use, and wire it to your device.

I see what you mean, but the potentiometers do not feed directly into the USB cable. First, they feed into a controller, and it's only the controller that feeds into the USB cable. With four potentimeters at three wires each, there are at least twelve wires between the potentiometers and the controller, not to mention the buttons.

So I will have to buy raw material cable, preferredly with different colors. But I just don't know how to call the type of cable ...

Best,

Holger

Holger,

I'm thinking, what you (probably) need is a ribbon cable.

A Google search for 'purchase ribbon cable' took me 0.23 seconds and gave me 1,280,000 results. Needless to say, your mileage may vary.

You could look at following links for some guidance, if this is what you are looking for.

You could also try Cat 5 or Cat 6 Ethernet data cables (One cable core will contain four pairs of multi colored cables). I am using these extensively for connecting various switches in my cockpit. Do have a look at this link for further details:-

Hope this helps?

Hey Mickey,

this is looking great. I might even be able to get this where I am now. Thanks a lot!

Great, 24AWG stranded sounds like a qualification that the shopkeepers will be understand. I am sure they have it, they just need to know exactly what I need. They are incredibly polite, so far they have preferred to have me leave with nothing rather than selling me something that might not work ...
