How do you make a complete backup of your FSX install?

Recommended Posts

Just curious because I plan on getting a new drive later and copy my current install of FSX witha ll the configs and addons onto the new drive.

Exactly how does one accomplish this besides copying the obvious FSX install directory. I also know there are quite a few files that FSX depends on that lies outside the FSX install folder. Can someone show me the proper way to do this.

Just incase I have to reinstall Windows all over again. I wanna be able to copy over my old FSX stuff and be able to load it up and have all my addons and settings.

The new drive must have the same drive letter as the current istall to make a direct copy. You can make image backups with Windows 7 (whole drives).

You sure about  this  since  thought using  the o/s  back up system  doesn't  actually copy  the registry files  etc that is  required

Remember also to back up your ‘Logbook.BIN’

In Win7 this can be found in C:\Users\youraccount\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files

This is your FSX logbook / total hours flown  etc...

It’s well hidden amongst all of your save games.

I clone all my drives with Acronis (free version) from either Seagate or WD, depending on what drives are being used. I have two HDs, one for WIndows, one for FSX, so of course two back up drives. I disconnect one of them, connect a backup drive, then 'boot to CD' in BIOS and run the program. I manually select which is the source, which is target and let it clone. Repeat procedure for the other drive.

I generally do this 3-4 times /year. Simple, not too long a process, and I have completey backed up my entire system.
