Norway!

Being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, a lot of virtual pilots want to fly in Norway. However, as with almost every part of the world, Norway totally sucks in FSX default.

Now some of you may know that there is some awesome freeware being created over the last few years (airports, mesh, land class, photoreal airport textures, etc.) but it's mainly available for Norwegians because most of the files are on a Norwegian site and most of the readme's are in Norwegian too. Even though I myself can read a little Norwegian, I found it hard to get into it all (also because everything is divided over seperate addons) so that's why I decided to register on the Norwegian forum where the main freeware developers are and I asked for some help in English. They were MOST kind (as was to be expected from Norwegians) and helped me a lot. Norway has never so looked so good on my PC now!

Yesterday the developer of 'Airports of Norway' (an absolute must have) posted that it wasn't a problem if I posted a link to the topic I started elsewhere: he is more then willing to help out other foreigners but it's hard for him to do so an all possible forums out there.

So do yourself a favor and check out the English topic about Norwegian freeware here:

http://www.flightsim.no/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=650715&page=1

Feel free to join the discussion over there! If you want to, you can of course also ask things here (I am a bit of an expert on it all by now LOL) but to get in contact with the developers themselves, the linked topic is the place to be! (Registering is free, of course.) Maybe I will post some more info on it all here too, if you want to.

P.S. Please only post questions in English in that particular topic! It IS after all a Norwegian forum and we don't want to turn it into an English forum. ;)

B) Got to love Norway. Yes the freeware is great, my hometown is about 95% accurate when it comes to mesh, coast lines and placing of buildings. But the textures suck, that's why I look forward to FTX Global because it will give Norway a more proper look(texture wise), until FTX Norway gets out sometime in 2014. Aerosoft is also doing Værnes (ENVY) and it looks great(and is also located in one of the most scenic areas of Norway), It's considered to be the most dangerous airport we have in this country.
FS Global Real Weather devs is also going to code in the local weather conditions that make this such a dangerous airport. Orbx has also hired a talented Norwegian guy to do some airports for FTX Global. So there are really exiting times ahead for us Norwegians

Good to see that your making an effort to make it easier for foreigners Jeroen. I can't register on the Norwegian Forum unfortunetly because I only have an hotmail address and for some reason they don't accept it..

Im reading your thread now, and I can fully understand your frustrations with the terrain.cfg files and stuff. I can't understand howto do them all either and I can read Norwegian :P  Hope they can make things abit easier in the future ..

Edit: Thanks a lot for starting that thread, now things start to make sense to me too haha And all the info gathered in one thread, Nice

LOL Glad being able to help a Norwegian with this!  ^_^

BTW For anyone not knowing this: FTX Global will work together perfectly fine with all the Norwegian freeware! So don't think you can skip the freeware and wait for FTX Global because you will be missing out on most of the fun. (Things may change considerably whenever FTX Norway may be released, though, but I don't expect that to happen this year!)

Yeah, this freeware I would say is a "must have" with FTX Global if flying in Norway B)

Norway is a excellent place to flightsim. Weather is interesting, lots of airports and lots of different kinds of approaches. Oh, and the freeware scenery is great.

Norway in FSX for me was a good lesson in how, with some good quality improved landclass, coastlines and mesh, and some great little add-on airports, you can have a fantastic place to fly in FSX, even if you've built it up primarily from freeware content.

I use GEX for Europe, and also own Aerosoft Oslo, and Trondeheim, and Cloud9 Bergen, but those are the only payware elements I own for Norway and they sit alongside a ton of high quality freeware add-ons that really make it one of my favourite places to fly.

Ok, here we go to get you started. I will show you how to get the most out of the Norwegian freeware without going too much in detail, so I will leave out some extra's that aren't mandatory for a good experience. I won't tell you to unzip everything everytime: that's rather obvious, I think. I will only tell you which folders within the various zips you need to add to the FSX Library: the other folders and files you can forget about. You can put the folders anywhere you want to but a logical place would be in FSX's Addon Scenery folder.

1. Airports of Norway
http://www.mediafire.com/download/sl4g4g61l92wtij/AoN+3.41.zip

Add to FSX Library:
AoN 3.41/Airports of Norway

2. NSX II
https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=7bd265c27f54e748&id=7BD265C27F54E748!168&authkey=!APO8B8TzVx5x7HI

Download NSX_II Ver.1 Beta. Click on the blue square above it (Patcher) to download Patch 1 NSX_II ver 1 and Patch 2 NSX_II ver1. Click on the blue square above it (Till NSX_II_Exclude-Scenery) to download 000-excl_ferry-quay_norway.BGL

Copy all four blg's from Patch 1 NSX_II ver1/Till NSX_II-scenery to NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II/Scenery
Copy the bgl from Patch 1 NSX_II ver1/Till NSX_II_exclude-scenery to NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II_Exclude/Scenery
Copy the bgl from Patch 2 NSX_II ver1 to NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II/Scenery
Copy 000_excl_ferry-quay_norway.BGL to NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II/Scenery

Add to FSX Library:
NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/Norway_alpin
NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/Norway_Scenic_LC
NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II
NSX_II Ver.1 Beta/NSX_II_Exclude

3. Norway GA Airfields
https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=68f40b20c179dfec&id=68F40B20C179DFEC!143&authkey=!ALzFckwbgQZYQ7U
Patch: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=68f40b20c179dfec&id=68F40B20C179DFEC!145&authkey=!ALaHcCLeHNN3AlA

Copy all files from the Scenery and Texture folders in Patch 1 N_GA 275/Norway_ GA Airfields/ to the Scenery and Texture folders in Norway GA Airfields v275/Norway_GA_Airfields

Add to FSX Library:
Norway GA Airfields v275/Norway_Churches_Lighthouses
Norway GA Airfields v275/Norway_GA_Airfields
Norway GA Airfields v275/Norway_Hospitals_FSX/VNLA_Baser_og_sykehus

4. Norway bridges
http://www.flightsim.no/fsno/filbibliotek/fsx/scenery/europa/norge/1293.html

Add to FSX Library:
nbx_v1.3/Norske Broer

5. Norway mesh
http://www.flightsim.no/fsno/filbibliotek/FS2004/scenery/europa/norge/114.html
It's created for FS2004 but works perfectly fine in FSX.

Copy everything from Quality.zip into Norway_mesh/Scenery.

Add to FSX Library:
Norway_mesh

6. Norway photoreal airport textures
Download all ten files that have the word 'photo' in it from this topic:
http://www.flightsim.no/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=650409#Post650409

Download the other photoreal textures from these links (you probably have to register first for the Flightsim.com downloads).
http://www.flightsim.no/fsno/filbibliotek/fsx/scenery/europa/norge/1361.html (ENGM)
http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?do=copyright&fid=171800 (ENCN)
http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?do=copyright&fid=171802 (ENBR)

Create a folder called AoN_Ground, create two folders called Scenery and Texture in it and copy all bgl files from the above zips to Scenery and all agn files from the above zips to Texture.

Add to FSX Library:
AoN_Ground

There are two (or three if you have UTX Europe) important additional steps to take.

1. Go to the folder AoN 3.41/Documents and read Scenery Library Priority.txt. This will tell you in which order you have to set everything in the FSX Library! Simply disregard addons you don't have. Make sure everything else is in the adviced order!

2. From the Airports of Norway readme:
"If you got UTE with Patch 1.2: Start the UTXE Setup. Menu -> Ultimate Terrain -> Modify Status of Relocated Airports. Disable ENGM.
OR: Go to FSX\Scenery\UtEurAirports\Scenery and DELETE ENGM_FL and ENGM_AP."

3. Read this post: download the file that's mentioned and edit it as described.

You're very welcome! If I could I would have uploaded a complete zip with everything in it so you would only have to add everything to the FSX library, but well, it's freeware and there are various developers so I will (have to) leave it up to them to bring things together in such a way that it's easier for everyone to experience a better looking Norway. ^_^ Until then, this has to do. And let's not forget that there is a big chance Orbx will release FTX Norway sometime, which will of course offer a very good and complete experience!
