FSXAssist & FSX Wx Engines

1 post in this topic

Many have been asking about which weather engine is best to use with FSXAssist or what is the best way to load an FSX weather engine.

To the first point all of the popular weather applications work well with FSXAssist but here are a few pointers that we found:

1) Default FSX Wx with realtime mode selected - no comments other that it produces no side effects and may appease most users for realism.

2) Opus FX - set to load BEFORE FSX. An Opus Wx crash (not seen yet in testing) will cause a reload if the FSXAssist Crash On Load option is deselected. We like Opus as a rule for Wx relaism.

3) REX Wx - set to load BEFORE FSX. Note that you will be required to select the Fly Now option after REX is fully loaded to inject REX Wx. With The FSXAssist Crash On Load option deselected ONLY the REX Wx engine (not the UI) will reload after an REX crash which we found interesting. We have requested that the REX Wx engine be returned as a standalone application however from the REX team.

4) ActiveSky Revolution - Also best to set to load BEFORE FSX. We really like ActiveSky and it functions well with FSXAssist.

To the second point - all addon FSX Wx engines have an advantage over the FSX default Wx in regards to Wx realism but we at SkyPilot are not in an position to recommend a particular brand.

One thing to keep in mind is that generally speaking, all addon Wx engines should be loaded before FSX in the FSXAssist UI and should allow FSXAssist to successfully reload them if an Wx engine crash is detected (and the FSXAssist Crash On Load option is deselected).

Please post your FSXassist / FSX Wx engine experiences here so others can learn from what you have found.
