To measure VAS, get Sysinternals' Process Explorer here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Run it and right click in the area where the column names are.....

Another quick and easy way to monitor VAS is available in the registered version of FSUIPC. By clicking a couple of entries in the "monitor" tab, it will display free VAS memory remaining above the menu bar. (If running in windowed mode). It updates continuously.

I have a well balanced and optimized system, and normally never come close to exhausting VAS with any PMDG product. The only add-on with which I have a problem is the FSLABS Concorde, which definitely will OOM if used in conjunction with a high-detail airport like Heathrow Extreme, or FSDT JFK. Using the FSUIPC VAS monitor gives me plenty of advanced warning that I'm getting close to a critical VAS shortage.

I'm not at my FS computer right now, but I can post how to enable this feature in FSUIPC later if anyone is interested.

Yes, Jim ... I'd be interested.  I can't find a "Monitor" tab in my FSUIPC.

I think this type of scenery is better suited to low and slow VFR flight in GA aircraft that don't have the kind of VAS overhead a complex airliner does.

Great thread, great info, but I have to vigorously disagree with this statement.  IMHO 35,000 feet is where MSEv2 shines.  You get EXACTLY what you would see if you were actually in flight.  No more of those repeating cornrow ground textures.

It's a small program that after you give your unique ID & password, another user can control your computer. It's really nice, and free.

Don't install this free version if you are anticipating PMDG support.  Let them give you their version.

What's the general opinion of using alternate shaders and external frame rate limiters nowadays also? Last time I seriously looked at this, many people were back and forth. (Again, I pretty much gave up trying to keep up because of all of the inconsistent opinions and results). Process killing programs, too, for that matter (GameBooster, Alacrity, etc.).

And, I agree, it would be nice to somehow have ALL of the factual data/tweaks captured somewhere, the latest and greatest info, that has been proven to improve say....maybe 2 or 3 standard deviations of the general FSX public. PMDG doesn't necessarily have to, but anyone in general. I know several have created installation guides, nVidia Inspector and the like. PMDG manuals include some of this information too. I'd certainly have a read of something like this and perhaps try it again...and who knows, maybe it'll lead to another sale if I buy the 777 with a semi-useable FSX. But if even FSGS had doubts on improving my system, not sure where that leaves me.

I feel that it really does need to be PMDG that makes this manual to optimizing setting in FSX.

They are at the top of the food chain of developers. What they decide to put in this manual would be gospel tried and true, and not more of the potpourri of bad and good information we have been getting for the past few years (and the reason that my settings were a mess).

They may include articles from developers like FSDT, Majestic or other big dogs, but the main body of the manual has to be from PMDG.

Ryan didn't hesitate or him-ha around, when setting up my FSX. He went in there like a man on a mission and changed settings like a piano tuner tuning a Steinway.

This is the kind of knowledge we need to have available to simmers interested in purchasing simulations like the PMDG 777.

One suggestion would be to include this manual with the purchase of the 777. A little incentive to buy the product and tune your sim machine at the same time.

I want to say that today was a first for me.

I was able to fly into Vancouver by FSDT and it looked perfect. Since I purchased this airport, I have never been able to use it. Thank you Ryan!

"Their" version? I'm guessing its the commercial version, which is the legal way to do it (someone mentioned them charging for the FSX tuneup).

Ryan said that he had considered that.  I believe it would be perfect.  Good for PMDG and good for their customers.

All hail PMDG and Ryan M.

Guys, honestly before this gets too out of hand (I've already received a bunch of tickets yesterday and today asking) - I can't sit here all day long personally setting up everyone's machines and FSX environments for them. What I did with Bob took almost 3 hours. I detailed what the issue was in his case and I think I've given people the information and tools to figure out what's going on with their own setups. If you have a specific question I'll be happy to answer it as best I can but it was not my intention here to announce that I will do "house calls" for anyone having any issue.

We have the TeamViewer account mainly to help with troubleshooting issues with our own products where it's just far easier and faster for me to come do something to a customer machine in a few minutes rather than going back and forth with them typing instructions out. Often the people I do this with aren't very computer literate in the first place and they don't understand what to do from typed instructions anyway. The vast majority of these sessions are over in minutes - it was never intended to be a way for me to go do full system setups for people. I've thought about offering that service for a fee actually, but I just don't know that I'd ever have the time given everything else I'm doing here.

Ryan is 100% right. No one should expect PMDG to tune their systems for free - and the real value of their expertise applied to tuning your FSX platform front-to-back would be hundreds of dollars - a figure that would stop most folks dead in their tracks. I would estimate $300 to $600 for the work he did on the OP's machine. Worth every dime? You bet. A lot of people won't know that until they've spent untold amounts of time trying to tune it right themselves. An unending task in FSX. The more stuff you pile on your flight deck, the bumpier the trip.

Hey Ryan.

I completely understand your lack of time to help with individual requests. Perhaps instead you could give some guidance and post it as a sticky on the forum? For those wanting to tweak their computer to optimize PMDG products it would be great!

One of those "stickies" is named 'AVSIM hardware & software guide': Have you looked up the 'credits' of that guide yet to find out who contributed to it?

And I remember a "sticky" in the PMDG forums dealing with video cards settings.

What happened to AVSIM

Yes, Jim ... I'd be interested.  I can't find a "Monitor" tab in my FSUIPC.

My mistake... Go to the "logging" tab. You can monitor up to 4 memory offsets within FSX that can provide a wealth of different information regarding the internal workings of the system. On the right side of the logging tab, under "Specific Value Checks" enter 024C in the first box marked "offset". (The first character in that parameter is zero, NOT the letter 'O').

Change the "Type" from the default S8 to S32

On the bottom of the page, you can choose to display this value either in the "FS Window" (if you run full screen) or "FS Title Bar" (if you run in windowed mode).

Then click "OK"

The displayed value will update every 10 seconds or so, and indicates the amount of free VAS memory remaining - not the total VAS in use.

If the number gets below about 250,000 bytes, you are getting close to the "OOM danger zone". I believe that is about the point where FSUIPC will start sounding the Windows default chime tone every few seconds.
