WALL OF SHAME - Is it time to consider one?

Featured Replies

Why don't you contact authorities in their area / country. I know for sure in this day and age that hacking into any website is illegal!

Pinning such individuals on a wall of shame would do the trick also. Not a fan of anyone who tries to ruin other peoples fun just because such a site banned them for misbehaving.

If you are to confront them with damning evidence and they still persist, then Name them!

My 2 cents...while I think this would be very popular, one lawsuit and it would muck things up.  Would it not be simpler to block connections?

Blocking connections is something we already do. Believe me, if we have the goods on someone that ends up on the wall, they are welcome to sue us all they want. In fact, if we get to that point, I would encourage them to spend tens of thousands of their dollars proving us wrong.

Take those damn script kiddies to court so they can learn a lesson, they are fully aware of what they are doing is illegal so I think they should take the consequences off their activety.

You should automatically report them to their ISP as well as publicising who they are which would mean of course that any other website could consider a ban and pop goes their hobby!

I'd say go for it...anything (legal) you can to to deter such stupid behaviour is a good idea in my books...

I can't argue that Ron. However, if we were ever sued, I would want to be able to say that we gave the person the opportunity to cease their attacks or whatever before we publicly exposed their activity.

The only thing to consider is: Do you have sufficient proof to nail 'em? If you do, what's the problem? No second chances, just do it! Let them sue and be damned!

Okay, send me your checkbook with a lot of blank checks... I know some lawyers that will obligingly help put some numbers on those...

Did I miss something?

Great idea Tom. Unlike the society that we seem to have become, I believe in consequences. Those who do wrong, HAVE to pay consequences, end of story.

After having weighed very carefully (and not seeking advice), whether to join this conversation, I am going to mention an aspect not easily admitted, because as senior management must remain entirely objective, and never suffer when hit, or to show hurt when it does.

Right?

Yesterday, when Tom was running our security software it pulled out and isolated a certain IP address from membership that was pounding Avsim. He emailed the guy asking how he, a friend, could do that. Tom's personal dismay and hurt was clearly evident to those who know him well. I couldn't believe it either and asked if he was certain, Tom sent me the proof, and there could be no mistake.

Therefore for me, I post this not just to talk about whether to have a wall of shame, but to express my own (just speaking for myself) dismay at how vindictive and hateful the most unlikely people can be. Being called bad names like "holy hypocrite" by a disturbed person is one thing (who knows what may have happened to him), but to be stabbed in the back by members who are regarded as friends is something altogether different.

Tom, Chase, Momtchil and I are too tough to want or need sympathy, and conflict is a part of life we all live with. However this is a serious and important discussion that will likely lead to a policy decision. Everyone should know how hurtful and damaging these shameful acts really can be felt by whom they are directed. Sure, we can take whatever is thrown at us, but it would be easier and more personally rewarding to invest our time and energy in helping rather than ducking.

Kind regards,

One private warning. If no change in future behavior, please post to the wall. Several bloggers I follow have similar policies about threatening communications and malicious behaviors.

My gut feel says "name 'em up front!".

But Tom rightly points out that if there was ever a legal backlash (even some trolls have money)... it would be better for AVSIM to be able to demonstrate that the user was given an opportunity to avoid publicity if they ceased action, but chose not to.

For that reason, I think that proposed route is the right one, for AVSIM.

PS.... Shame that nations get pulled into this. (UK, US and Netherlands in this case).... it makes me ashamed to be British and I feel guilty on behalf of the idiots doing this stuff (although I have to be honest, I don't actually even know what a ddos attack is!!)....

......then again, it's just people really isn't it? ....... the nationality is more just coincidence....   Brits aren't a nation of hackers!! ...... (as aren't the Americans or Dutch)  ........ I hope people bear this in mid and don't reach silly conclusions that the nationality of these trolls, is what's fundamental here.
