From FSX Deluxe Edition + Acceleration Pack to the correct FSX SDK - 2 Networked PC's

Recommended Posts

As many simmers, I want to have a second PC networked  to run there various add-on Apps that I have been running from my FSX desktop

I first read quite a few of the instruccions and comments in the the forum, enough to get started with the install.

I think I completed the FSX Desktop install OK, but I am not sure I have done it right.

Before I proceed with the 2nd PC (Laptop) I need help with quiestions A and B at the bottom of this post.

This is the procedure I followed:

(1) From DVD Disk1 Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition
From D:\FSX Disk1\SDK ran Setup.exe to install what seems to be the RTM SDK (?) into
         C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK

(2) From DVD Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration Expansion Pack
    D:\SDK\SP1a installed fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe and then
    D:\SDK installed sdk.msi (seems to be SP2)
In both cases there was a notification that previous ver was being deleted

(3) Validated that the following files were created:
    C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\object_Placement.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Special Effects SDK\visualfxtool.dll

(4) Initialized the pointer to the 3 files above by editing the following file
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX\dll.xml
In this fille, I updated the reference to each of the 3 files above by:
Changeed the value of the <Disabled>True<Disabled> tags from "True" to "False" on each of the 3 entries
I also put the reference to each file of the 3 files as a full path name instead of the default truncated path name

(5) Copy SimConnect.xml file from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\config folder
    into:
    C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX folder

(6) Copy SimComment.ini file from:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\config folder
    into:
    C:\Users\User\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files folder
    This is the file content:
    [simConnect]
    level=verbose
    console=1
    ;RedirectStdOutToConsole=1
    ;OutputDebugString=1
    ;file=c:\simconnect%03u.log
    ;file_next_index=0
    ;file_max_index=9

When I launch FSX, I was first see this in the SimConnect panel, followed quickly by a bunch of event line records:
     SimConnect ver 10.0.61259.0
     0.01985 Server:Scope=local,Protocol,Pipe,Name=\\.\pipe\Microsoft Flight Simulator\SimConnect,MaxClients=64
     0.02497 Server:Scope=local,Protocol IpV6,Address=x127.0.0.1,Port=52111,MaxClients=64
     0.02900 Server:Scope=local,Protocol IpV4,Address=x127.0.0.1,Port=52112,MaxClients=64
     0.54932 DLL Loaded: Path="C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\Object_Placement.dll" Version="10.0.61637.0"
     0.55415 DLL Loaded: Path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll" Version="10.0.6137.0"
     0.55770 DLL Loaded: Path="C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Special Effects SDK\visualfxtool.dll" Version ="10.0.6137.0"
     0.85686 DLL Path="Modules LVLD.DLL" Version="1.4.2.1"
     0.86175 Panelsdata export ..........etc, etc
1.85091 DLL Path = "Modules GPSModule.dll" vers unknown
1.87297 DLL Path IVAO IvAp v2 ........etc, etc
     1.87537 Panelsdata ..........etc, etc

In FSX I see between the Help and Add-on buttos a new "Tools" button with the three following drop-down options:
     Object Placement Tool
     FSX tool
     Traffic Tool Box
       Settings
       Explorer
       Map
       Dump airport list

(A) Up until this point I have NOT installed the versions of the SDK downloaded from the Microsot support site, which
could be more recent than the ones that used from my original DVD's (FSX Deluxe Edition, and FSX Acceleration pack:
FSX SDK SSP1A "fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe",  = version 1.0 from 5/15/2007 size 161.7MB (web) and 165,569KB once downloded to the PC
FSX SDK SP2 "sdk.msi", = don't see version#, size 211MB (web) and 216,249KB once downloaded to the PC

=>Should I intll these downloads (updates) ?

(B) Also, at this point in the installation, only the following Programs show up as installed in Win7 control panel:
     Microsoft flight simulator X:Acceleration 10.0.61637.0
Microsoft flight sumulator X:Acceleraction SDK 10.0.61637.0

=> Do I need other programs installed in the FSX PC before I start the installations of the SDK's in the second PC (Laptop)?

Hi,

1. You did not need to install anything on your FSX computer. It's OK that you did, but not necessary.

2. On the Second PC, install SDK 1 from the disk. Run the Simconnect.msi file.

3. Download SDK1A. Install. If I remember it tells you that it needs to uninstall SDK 1 first. That is OK and normal. Run the Simconnect.msi file.

4. Repeat #3 using SDK2.

5. Set up the the proper .ini file on the second computer.

I did and It has been working very well....

I setup IvAp in the laptop as pimary interface and from there I use the voice, chat, F Plan etc.

In the FSX machine I only have to launch IvAp but aferwrads one doesn't see anything else on that machine. Everything else runs in the Laptop.

By coincidence, I am just about ready to do it again now that I am setting a brand new Desktop where I am re-installing FSX.

In step 7 above, are you saying that the laptop is the computer that does NOT have FSX installed on it? Are you also saying that you installed these files above in step 7 into this laptop that does NOT have FSX installed? Why I ask is because for a couple of reasons. First, you have an entry " Microsoft flight simulator X: Acceleration V 10.0.61637.0 ", which is the actual entry for the FSX game on my main computer. I also have the two SDK entries that you have above, on my main computer as well as the previous mentioned entry. The 3 SimConnect client entries are on my second (client computer), where Active Sky, and other such addons are installed as well. I am confused. I thought that the SDK's where installed on the computer that has FSX installed, and the simconnect clients are installed on the second computer (client) with the addons, such as Active Sky. I should mention that I have FSX Gold Edition, which includes FSX Deluxe, and Acceleration.

In step 7 above, are you saying that the laptop is the computer that does NOT have FSX installed on it?

Correct. The Laptop does not have FSX installed.

Are you also saying that you installed these files above in step 7 into this laptop that does NOT have FSX installed?

Correct. The following programs are installed in the Laptop where there is no FSX installation:(3 separate versions of SimConnect Client, SDK for Acceleration and SDK for SP2.

And, I do not have any of the 3 SimConnect Clients in the primary FSX desktop.

However, I use FSX  Delux Edition plus FSX Acceleration and not the Gold Edition (which I also have but  but decided not to install).

I have been lucky with my setup. Runs quite well.

You also have the following entry, which is " Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration  v 10.0.61637.0, which it would seem is the FSX game itself on your laptop. I say this, because after installing Flight Simulator X Deluxe, and then installing Acceleration as per instructions, I ended up with the entry in my add/remove programs of Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration  v 10.0.61637.0, which is exactly the same as what you have on your laptop that does NOT have FSX installed. I am thoroughly confused. Initially I thought the SDK's were installed on the computer that HAS FSX installed on it, and the SimConnect clients were installed on the computer that does NOT have FSX installed on it. Could you please clarify, or anyone else who can get me started on the right track. Thank you all in advance.

Well I got it working finally. Here is my setup. The SDK's are installed on the PC that HAS FSX installed, and  the SimConnect clients are installed on the second PC that does NOT have FSX installed. My problem was with some text errors in my SimConnect.xml file. The only entries in my second PC in the add/remove are the three Simconnect clients. My FSX machine has FSX, and the SDK's in the add/remove.

You are right. I incorrectloy entered the line "Microsoft flight simulator X:Acceleration V 10.0.61637.0" in point 7. That should hyave been the one for the SDK.

Unfortunately I can't edit that text now.

Well....I am glad you got your system to work. I know its not straightforward and one can make many mistakes with simple typos.

This seems to be what I'm looking for to run more than the 4 monitors my system will handle. Am I on the right track, or not?

The primary objective of this procedure was to configure and install several FSX add-on applications on a second PC (Laptop) over the home network, to free up the main PC (desktop) to run FSX with as little overhead as possible. This in order to improve performance and minimize risks of crashing.

Also, (and this is also important) to allow operation of the texting, talking, and other interaction with the IVAO network (while flying) to occur on the Laptop to avoid risk of typing characters within the unintended active window on the desktop (FSX) PC, which a few times in the past got me into trouble with my flight.

Specifically, also, this procedure installs SimConnect correctly.

I am not sure how specifically this could help you run 4 screens. I believe this would have more to do with installing the GPU card, and I suspect that would go on the pain Desktop (FSX) PC.

I see.  Since I've never been involved in FSX online chat, or a virtual airline, I didn't realize there were such problems.  I can already run 4 monitors on my GTX Titan card (just have to buy them), But in the interests of total immersion, I thought 6 or more would be cool.  I don't have a laptop, either!

I have tried everything and nothing seems to makes sense WHY it's not working. I have trouble shot everything... The only thing left to explore is whether the fact that my Server is 64bit and my client is 32bit makes a difference in the SimConnect config.
