No, but it could be.  Your point, kind Sir...?

In all seriousness: we could all win the lottery tomorrow. That is my point.

OMG not the "affinity mask" business again:  noone has ever proven its value one way or the other.

I know the feels. I've done away with it. I've settled with my stable OC and I have no problems running fsx without it.

For me it does. I should of stated I'm using a laptop with and extreme cpu. My bios options are limited (only options to disable HT, adjust when the fan kicks in and what temps the system should throttle the cpu) and I can manually overclock by increasing the multipliers using ThrottleStop in windows, not by base clock (that's locked in bios). So if I set the affinitymask to use 2 cores (uses the last 2 cores) I have a little more overhead to bring my multipliers up and since it's using less cores (lower power draw - TDP), the temps are reduced. I got a max temp of 86 with AM=12 and 91 with AM=14 @ 3.7GHZ. This is with ALL 4 cores running at 28x (my base clock is 133MHZ, stock multipliers are 18x when using 4 cores).

With AM=12 and a TDP of 75W, I can run fsx @ 3.9GHZ without a BSOD. I get an instant BSOD with AM=14 at that TDP and voltage. I don't think the increase of temps from raising the voltage are beneficial so I stuck with AM=12.

Essentially, my OC is achieved based on TDP, TDC and the amount of cores being used. I don't want to mess around with the current draw as I don't wanna fry my motherboard with that extra juice. Stock TDP for my cpu is 55W, and I change that to 75W when I OC for FSX. My GPU is running at stock and TDP is also 75W. So my 180W PSU has to deal with all that power being drawn when running FSX hahaha.

I can see now what you mean, thanks for explaining, but I don't think this would apply to the OP's system as he has a much more OC friendly chip, loading 4cores instead of 2 I don't think he's temps is going to get affected that much. and I think he will benefit more with having it run at 4 cores.

If i remove it from my .cfg the stutters come back so for me it's essential(Im not blind I know what I see). I see great benefits in using it.

FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION on the other hand I can't really see what it does, tried changing it with different values but my eye can't "see" any benefits with it, but I like to have it there anyway because maybe it does something I can't see..

In all seriousness: PD3 is not an entertainment product.

I find it very entertaining when doing my flight "training" B)

Another idea is to define profiles for graphics settings, so you can change the profile according to the scenery you're flying in. Profiles can also be changed in flight, so for example, after leaving YMML, you can go back to a higher-quality profile.

Best advice yet. Set up FSX to run depending on the aircraft, the scenery and the weather. It's no use trying to fly the NGX with max settings in bad weather at Orb'x YMML, it ain't gonna happen! BUT, you can easily fly a framerate friendly aircraft in fair weather in Orbx's rural areas of New Zealand with settings at max. In fact I have been doing just that with the new Sibwings Antonov AN-2. So tailor your settings. I think most of us at some time or another, probably when first starting with FSX, expect to run the sim at high settings simply because we have a 'fast' machine, but with nothing to compare things with and no yardstick.

FSX is like a woman, she needs a lot of attention and likes being pampered. Nurture the cfg tweaks and take time to work with each one, making sure things work on an individual tweak before moving on to another. Use a third party AI program and still ensure no more than 30% AI.Also, switch off GA AI when flying airliners and switch off airline AI when flying GA! Switch off airport vehicles and boats and run cars at 10%. I'm probably saying all the stuff you know anyway, but sometimes the obvious often needs to be revisited.

Like most things in life, FSX is a compromise, and I can promise you that no matter what sim you fly, there will inevitably be some compromises you'll have to make somehwere down the line. For the record, I don't experience any stutters, the sim, most of the time runs as smooth as silk and the only thing I experience in heavy AG areas are a few blurries, but nothing to write home about.

Yeah, having different profile on where you fly and what planes you use I think is just as important as any tweak. Good advice  :good:

I have not switched on my Flight Sim PC in a couple of months and I doubt if I will switch it on again for another 3 or 4 months or longer. To much fiddling not enough flying! I am still very much interested but I am enjoying the brake. By the time I am ready to start participating again it will be on a new de-lidded Haswell Rig at 5ghz+  with a GTX 780 and all the best hardware available cooled to subzero temps built following NickN's new guide. It will be running X-plane 10 and FSX and hopefully P3D V2.

I don't see any reason to continue to be lest than satisfied with current setup and live with Bsods etc when we are on the brink of so many potential game changers. I would rather embrace a brake even if it were not imposed by necessity.

I read all of these posts with a ton of bewilderment.

I have an Intel i7 990 Extreme running at 3.47ghz.

It has 12gb of DDR memory.

It has an NVidia GeForce GTX 460.

It's running Win7 64bit Pro

I can run FSX without any of these tweaks.  Don't use a one.  Here are my settings:

Graphics -

  • Screen Resolution: 1920x1080x32
  • Filtering Trilinear
  • Antialiasing: checked
  • Global Texture Resolution: Very High
  • Preview DirectX 10: unchecked
  • Lens flare: checked
  • Light bloom: unchecked
  • Advanced animations: checked

Aircraft -

  • Global settings Medium High
  • High-resolution 3-D virtual cockpit: checked
  • Aircraft casts shadows on ground: checked
  • Aircraft casts shadows on itself: unchecked
  • Aircraft landing-lights illuminate ground: checked

Scenery -

  • Global settings: Custom
  • All of the sliders are full right.
  • Land detail textures: checked
  • Ground scenery shadows: unchecked

Weather -

  • Global settings: Ultra High
  • Cloud draw distance: 60mi
  • Cloud detail: Detailed clouds
  • Cloud coverage density: Maximum

Traffic -

  • Airline: 20%
  • GA: 20%
  • Airport vehicle: Medium
  • Road vehicles: 20%
  • Ships and ferries: 40%
  • Leisure boats: 40%

I have frames set to unlimited and sitting on 34R at KSEA in the virtual cockpit of the Eaglesoft Citation X v2 I see 30fps.

That's no tweaking of any kind.  None.

If you're having to overclock and do all manner of crazy stuff to see this performance... it might just be your computer has issues... but hey, go ahead and blame the one item that's identical between your system and mine.

The problem with P3D is that LM can remove public availability whenever they please.

True, so the big risk is $50.  Not really much of risk if you ask me.  I fly FSX and don't own P3D but I really wonder about all of the hand wringing over whether its entertainment or not.  I think its the same as driving 10km over the speed limit, technically its a violation of the Highway Traffic Act (where I live) but who has not done this.

Only if you never buy any addons for it. The risk could be much higher than that.

Can someone post a link to an FSX video that in their opinion is "smooth" so I can see if thats what I'm seeing in my sim.

Cheers

There should be a cure for this fsx error but I can't find it and becoming more frustrated 99% tweaking this and that and maybe 1% flying - if that.

Crap, I thought that was what FSX was all about.

That won't be of much use because most really smooth FSX video's have been recorded at half speed and then speeded up during editing...

Well I see the anti tweakers have come in in full force  When I last did a reinstall I was giving the Orbx policy "Don't tweak just fly" option a shoot.

Took me 5 minutes into the flight and I started adding my tweaks, was just unberable without them. But hey If people can live without them what's better than that..and Im happy for you. I can't

And don't tell me there is something wrong with my system or something because it's not, overclocking and tweaking is essential for me...

What are your autogen settings? and Is the performance in default KSEA or in ORBX. Also see that you have antilazing tagged so I Guess you don't run strong Nvidia Inspector AA...
