Aivlasoft is the answer! If I need help, it is available and it will show me the directions from the gate to the runway on the map (or vice versa), if I want to do it like the pro, I just have to look at the chart on my second screen.

When I fly airliners I use ProATC/X and it's IMPOSSIBLE to 1. understand and 2. remember all the taxi instructions, so I use Follow Me v2 (freeware) for that. If I didn't have that one I would use progressive taxi without feeling guilty. But most of the time I know the airports I am on and I simply taxi to my destination, following my own route. I never had complaints about that from anyone... Digging up pdf charts for the internet just for this is a bit too much for me. There is a limit to my simming needs. ^_^

I try not to use it (except if I get lost, because in that case FSX ATC is not helpful at all), for a very simple reason: If I fly airliners, I usually operate them out of Vienna, so I know the airport layout quite well - this doesn't mean I know where every single gate or taxiway is located exactly, but I know enough to know how Vienna Ground wants me to taxi - or out of Innsbruck (it's hard to make a mistake here, as it only has two taxiways ), and for my destination airport I try to have charts at hand, and try to familiarize with the airports layout before arrrving there, so I usually know where I am going to exit the RWY and where my gate is located.

But most of my flying GA out of little airports in the PNW, so there's no need for progressive taxi either, as there usually isn't even a ground controller at those airports.

Wawo your preparation for approaching the airport sounds like the way a real world airline pilote would do. It must take you lots of calculation to know how far down the runway will you go until you have eventually stop. I get lost a lot in big airports i have manage to taxi for takeoff on flightbeam KIAD with out the progressive taxi on option . Lets see if i can continue doing the same with other airports. Am hoping to improve my taxing skills .

I guest when you are in one of those long 3 hour flights you have much to do than monitor your instruments . You can also start viewing your approach chart 30 minutes before approaching your destination . That is something i will look forward to doing from now on maybe i would stop using the progressive taxi on option.

If I can download and save a chart as a pdf, I send them to my 7" tablet...makes a great kneeboard. :)

Yes it does, detailed ground charts including gate numbers. If you want to try it free for one month, you can download iand experience it, it's very simple to use and install.

I always use Progressive Taxi. It saves a lot of bother, and I really don't care whether some people think it's "lame"

That's actually only, because otherwise I'm bored during cruise B), and I only guess from my experience, which taxiways may be suitable for exiting: I mainly fly the AAX, always with the payload settings, and always with the same amount of fuel reserves, so landing roll is usually approximately the same distance on every flight, plus I don't care for exits where I would have to make a turn of more than 90 degrees, because that way I would have to slow down to below 10kts, which will only hold up traffic behind me

Why not just spawn to the active rwy :P

I generally fly at airports I'm fairly familiar with, so don't need progressive taxi. However, for larger airports or airports I've not been to before, I've downloaded followme2 which provides a follow me car whenever I need it.

I only fly online, so no, I never use progressive taxi. I do it like they do in real life: I consult my charts prior to calling for taxi. It's really easy and realistic. You should try it some time :)

Just as I always try to do a manual landing, to practice flying skills through what is one of the most difficult phases of flight, I also like to manually taxi (if I can find out where FSX has parked my aircraft on the airport taxi diagram :) ). While landing may be the most crucial phase of flight, taxying with a clearance can be real daunting, especially if you are at an unfamilar airport or even at a familar one but with construction that changes the usual taxi clearances.

I have sped up my FSX ATC to make it harder to read and and take down (and removed the ATC text from my monitor), as this is like the real world- certainly on the east coast of the US and I suspect many other busy parts of the world. If I know where I am starting from I use a runway diagram- and before the clearance is received I usually look at the diagram and work out what might be the most direct way to reach the expected take-off runway. Like I would do in RL.

If you get a third party airport with good scenery, markings and lighting, taxying either out to the runway or into the gate (this requires that you make a unique gate for your aircraft sometimes) can be a great experience.

of course, at uncontrolled airports, you just get to the active runway the best way that you can....

Good thread, thanks, Bruce.

So is it hard to fallow the instruction the ATC gives you for taxi? Because to me it is some times because you have to taxi major slow so you won't miss your turn.

Kool i have second monitor but i just haven't set it up yet. Now thinking about it your idea won't be bad at all it is a major help when taxing on busy airports

I only fly on Vatsim so if there is a controller online I just write down the taxi instructions (AK-B-D-Cross 33R, hold short 06L for example) and then consult the chart of off we go. Do I make mistakes...yes...but generally it goes ok. If there no controller online when I am ready to taxi I still consult the chart but just make up my own route to the runway.
