Help! Image Quality hit after changing monitors

Recommended Posts

This is probably not a DX-10 issue, but the folks in this forum are pretty 'on the ball' so I thought I might ask you for help.

I normally use a 40" Sony Bravia HDTV in 1920X1080X32 resolution for FSX, connected via HDMI to my PC. I took that monitor up to the cottage, so I temporarily put a 1280X1024 computer monitor on the PC to do some maintenance. I fired up FSX once to check some scenery and changed the screen resolution to match. Today, feeling the need to do some flying, I decided to try FSX on a larger 60" Sony Bravia that I have for home theater. I hooked it up with HDMI set up the same as I had my 40" Sony and set the resolution on FSX settings back to 1920X1080.

On the PC desktop, the image looked fine (excellent - as I expected). But when I fired up FSX, as soon as my flight started, the Image Quality changed to really bad. It looked like it had switched to a lower resolution or something - menus, onscreen text barely readable, terrible aliasing... this was in full screen mode. I changed to windowed mode and it was perfect. But I don't like task bars and borders, so I always use full screen mode. FSX splash screen and 'loading' window was fine.

I checked my Inspector settings and my FSX.CGF and compared to saved versions and nothing looked altered. I'm at a bit of a loss. Any idea what happened? What runs differently in windowed mode versus full screen?

Take a look at this, Brian: AutoHotKey will allow you to run in Windowed mode while completely hiding the borders:-

Interesting workaround Paul and useful for a lot of apps. I'll look into this. Thanks!

But... any idea why this would start happening? I'd prefer to understand and fix the cause rather than put a band aid on it.

Nope - sorry Brian! I know nothing about modern televisions!

ck your tv settings for that port

What settings would I be looking for? (I'm at a loss to know which settins the TV might apply when the PC is in full screen mode but not to windowed.)

I don't have a answer but I would ck my fsx cfg to see if I have multiple entry's for your monitor or tv. As far it working in windowed mode and not full screen has to be a wrong setting some ware but where to look I don't know but I would start at my fsx cfg. maybe try making a new one and set things up from scratch. Just to blow the dust off this thread...

Here's a brain-dead but common problem when switching anything graphics related with FSX:

FSX automatically sets its screen resolution back to default when detecting graphics systems changes.  I've seen this more than once and spent at least one Sunday afternoon running down the solution.  Maybe this is your issue?

It did reset but i set it back to 1920X1080, which the FSX.cfg shows. In fact, it's running at that resolution as long as I'm in windowed mode.

I think when I changed monitors, Windows changed the display driver or manager. Unfortunately, I did not note the driver names when I was running with the other monitor, but it I think it's different (Nvidia indicates I'm connected to a SONY TV, and I THINK it used to say SONY Bravia). Could be the problem, but I can't really troubleshoot it until i get the other monitor back home.
