Split-Scimitar Winglet Modeling on the NGX?

Recommended Posts

The new winglet design has been placed on multiple aircraft - including those of United Airlines. Is there any chance these can be modeled in the NGX? I have placed a few photo links below for some images of the winglet design from Boeing.

It appears to be an option on the -900ER. Before you post on here - there is already a thread about this, please note I'm posting this because these new winglets have actually been fitted onto an aircraft. Is there a chance these can be put on the (hopefully soon to come) PMDG 737 NGX -900ER?

I would like to add that instead of making a "NEW" plane like the (NG apposed to the NGX) -Winglets/no Winglets- That instead of adding another 3 aircraft that it should be a "Paint" addon. Meaning when you load the United paint, you would get the choice of choosing the Scimitar or the regular blended winglets. On startup meaning as soon as you click "start flight" a little box would pop up with 2 checkbox's 1 for each choice! Just a little input from a fellow flight simmer who wanted to add something!

We'll see but it would take a change to the flight model too - the whole point of these things is that they add additional fuel savings over the normal winglets.

It would also mean a modification to the textures also? Or an additional texture for the winglet like with the MD-11.

Well, the flight model itself won't change significantly...if at all. The only correction the NGX would have to undergo is the fuel consumption with this new type of winglets. It'd be great if PMDG considered it for SP2, which as we all know is still quite a long way down the road.

if PMDG does make a model for the NGX with scimitar winglets will they be an update or would you have to pay for the model?

Funnily enough, there are people who have actually flown the scimitars and they wouldn't agree with you...

Hmmm.... No. Entire limitations sections have been rewritten for the Scimitar winglets.

So, yes, there is quite a different flightmodel behind it.

Most likely paid - it would require a decent amount work to both model, and adjust the dynamics.

...if at all, of course.

Is it really worth it? I mean.....as opposed to spending time, effort and money on a completely new aircraft?

Of course there's a slightly different feel to it when flying the actual NG with the new type of winglets, but the question is whether it is possible to simulate that slightly different feel within FSX.

The only way PMDG could do it is if they obtained the actual performance data from Boeing and fine-tuned the current flightmodel to match that data to a certain extent.

After all it's their choice - however, I'm quite positive that a "split-scimitar winglet extension" would find a lot of interest in the community/the market, since almost all the major airlines around the world are slowly fitting those new winglets on their NG's.

I think it makes much more sense to wait for the 737-MAX and put that out as a separate product than to make scimitar winglets for the NGX. With the current projects PMDG has set for themselves, timeline seems to be right for a MAX release after the real aircraft has been delivered.

Our whole fleet now have them, looks quite good actually! There is not a noteable difference vs the "normal" winglets other than a fuel saving for the company (and offcourse some differences in the (wind) limitations). Would be nice if PMDG modelled this offcourse, but as I said, it would be nice..
