I saw tail number 911 on the news last night.  I did not know that some of these have been modified to fight forest fires.

Thanks for pointing that out, I have no idea how to tell the difference.  I just saw three engines and figured that it was the MD11.

Shorter body, no winglets and a larger horizontal stabiliser are the three main instantly identifiable differences between a DC10 and an MD11. :)

Better than most non-aviation people, I guess.

-No winglets is the biggest giveaway

-Larger tail (more subtle if you didn't know to look for it)
