United getting split scimitar winglets on their 737s

What purpose do they serve?

Edit: something about fuel saving.. hope the ground vehicles dont get too close otherwise someone will have a really bad day!

I hate them! But I also hated winglets on the 757 and 767 and later they grew on me.

I think this is a case of "monkey see - monkey do". I'm sure this is in response to Airbus putting the NEO's Sharklets on there current models calling it CEO (Current Engine Option). So naturally Boeing puts the MAX winglets/wing fence  on their current models.

From the shine on the wings, are they made of  carbon fiber? Looks similar to the look of the 787 wings.

The NG's wings are aluminium, I think those on the MAX will be as well, as currently composite production processes can't sustain the production rate required for the 737, as least for large parts like the wings or fuselage. I'm not sure about the winglets though.
