A woman has died after what police are calling an “extreme case of gratuitous violence” in downtown Montreal.

The attack happened at 12:20 a.m. Monday on St. Laurent Blvd. near Ste. Catherine St. shortly after a man was thrown out of two strip clubs for aggressive behaviour.

Witnesses say the man tried to punch several pedestrians before walking up to the woman as she was crossing the street and hitting her several times.

“He remained very aggressive toward the pedestrians, cyclists and even the cars that were going by on St. Laurent,” said Montreal police Const. Daniel Lacoursiere.

you never know when you leave your home if you're ever coming back :(   My parents and in-laws are elderly and after last nights killing, it scares me.  Very disturbed place this planet we live on!

Montreal Police HQ is 1 block away :O  no joke!  hundreds of officers inside/out.

This is such sad reading after the marvellous experiences I enjoyed less than 2 weeks ago in Alberta, where I found the Canadian folks so welcoming, so helpful, so accommodating, so easy to get along with. Cannot get my head around this happening of all places, in Canada.

This is absolutely horrible. This man deserves life without parole.

This sort of thing isn't a Canadian thing or any national origin for that matter because people like this come from all walks of life. No  country is immune to this sort of thing.

Real shame and a case of the wrong place at the wrong time.
