call me crazy but i just spent 30 mins sitting there at boston in the cold and dark cockpit admiring it, in 3d on the projector so amazing it is. I felt like reaching out and grabbing the switches on the overhead panel.

Clayton whats the procedure for running 3d with FSX? What glasses do you use, I have a pair from the cinema lying around and would like to try 3d

I have the same projector as yours

I use a Benq w7000 mounted behind me which is similar to you guys w1080st (except it's a long throw and is a bit sharper). Been playing on a projector for a long time, and yes it's way better than a monitor.

To the guy asking about audio without running wires, just get yourself a WI-FI audio transmitter with remote amp receivers, the sounds in FSX are not all that "hi-fi fancy" anyhow. Go visit an audio forum and ask them which one works the best, or look at reviews on Amazon or something, there are a bunch of different ones these days.

As far as 3D goes, you'll need to buy the Nvidia 3D Vision utility from Nvidia's site (not the glasses, just the software). It is cool in 3D at first, but the effect does get tiring after a while, and also landing in 3D is pretty bad because the runway lights are at the wrong perspective (rendered incorrectly in 3d). 3D in FSX is cool when flying through REX clouds and when flying around Photo-Real mountains, that's the best part of it is the clouds and photo-real areas such as mountains.

For a screen, a cost-effective option is the Da-Lite High Power 2.4 gain screens, this will increase the brightness to allow you to use your lamp for a longer period of time. The cheap pull-down DA-lite High Power 2.4 gains can be had under $400 depending on screen size.

i am using a 106" screen.

How does using a screen, increase lamp life? I'm already using low power for mine, and it's plenty bright, even in ambient light.

Thanks

Because most lamps these days can easily last 5000-6000 hours, but only if it REMAINS bright enough. Sure it's plenty bright on a lamp sub-3000 hours and in 2D, but in 3D you lose 70% of the brightness through the glasses. That is why I bought the Benq w7000 (it has an adjustable IRIS which allows me to use a LAMP on a screen that is way too bright, but the IRIS lets me turn down the lumens hitting the screen).

I was able to get 7,500 hours out of one lamp, because of how bright it remained by using the HP screen.

If the screen makes it too bright, then you can add an ND filter for about $30, but with the w7000 I use the IRIS. The other Benq's might need an ND filter because they don't have the adjustable IRIS (well except the w7500 does). You use the ND filter while the lamp is still too bright / too new, and then once it wears in and gets dimmer, you remove the ND filter.

I still don't get it, my lamp is rated at 2000 hour at full power and 5000 hours at low power. I have mine set to low power, and easily get 5000+ hours. How would a screen improve that? Where's the connection? Note my projector has a pretty high lumen rating already, 3000 full power /2600 low power. Which is why I can use Ambient light

Thanks

Tom

Hi Zoran,

I use those cheapy red / blue glasses and play fsx by using tridef, go to the tridef website and buy their 3d driver then just load fsx using the tridef application, pretty simple setup

I am just amazed by the huge projector image and the 3d, no joke, i just sat there in my room, (room was dark and it was night outside) looking at the 737 flight deck from the jump seat, just thinking i am actually sitting in a 737 flight deck, I sat in this state like for 30 minutes.

yes it is true not too good to use 3D on landing or take off but once in cruise or climb admiring those huge clouds coming at your is breathtaking ! sometimes I just sit there and shake my head in disbelieft !

Thanks Clayton, The software has a 14 trial so cant hurt to try!  sounds like good fun and wont hurt to watch some 3d movies as well

ZORAN

I looked at that Tridef site, it's not clear, do you need a 3D capable projector/Monitor, or does the software allow you to display 3D on a regular  monitor/projector?

Thanks

hi,

just a regular monitor / projector will do

Check your video card as well. Nvidea has an enable 3d stereoscopic section that appears to work but I will need to find some glasses first

Thanks for the tip, will look around for audio transmitters -- i take it you can only transmit in stereo, and not in DTS or any of these fancy 5.1 codecs?

I'm really fustrated about how to setup the projector (looking more towards a permanent placement for cinemea, and gaming). However, as you know, the projector is 'short-throw' so putting it up the wall at the end of the room throwing to the other side gets a 200"+ picture which is a bit too big. Lol.

I have to place it on a coffee table or something, but then we run into the problems of cables again -- I guess I will use the carpet hiding trick.

Use tridef for fsx because the runway lights don't look distorted, but cockpit are far better with Nividia. Flying in 3d is great for the landing part but most too lazy just fly 1080p 90% of the time.

You would be amazed at what a bag of zip ties and a coffee table leg can do. A wall mount would be okay for fsx I think but maybe a little to close up for movies.

Heres a pic of my reconfigured setup in the office..as you can see, the 20" LCD is tiny compared to the 120+" throw of the projector at ~ 1.5 m.

Thinking perhaps to get a soundbar next to simply the wiring.
