August 14, 201312 yr Thank you J van E, your clarification was very helpful. I feel more confident about what to expect when I do bit more fiddling. Also the penny dropped as to what FTXG is: replacement textures. I'll be looking forward to Global updates and enhancements. I also now see why LC is so critical. Best regards. August 14, 201312 yr (I would still recommend the FTX Core Update that I mentioned in my post above Jeroen's, if you're seeing anything that you don't think is right, as a 'FTX Central' user).
August 14, 201312 yr Sorry Dave, I meant to thank you for your thoughtful post. I really appreciate the feedback, it does the forum proud I feel. All in all I have some great food for thought and plan to put it to work when I have time, soon. Cheers, Gareth Wilkinson LEAL Costa Blanca, SPAIN
August 14, 201312 yr and 2. outside an FTX region with hybrid disabled, but it's still not totally clear to me. Have been wondering the same thing, and decided to re-read the FTXGlobal Handbook (the PDF file in FTX Central). It says that if you fly exclusively outside an FTX Region you should select FTX Global but do NOT select hybrid mode. If the hybrid mode is selected, then the FTXG features are not quite to their full capacity. Evidently the compromise works in both directions: the hybrid mode is a compromise to both the GTX region and to FTXG outside the region. And to get the full affect of FTXG outside an FTX region, you should select Global but not hybrid. I do not fly between FTX regions (fly in Europe only) therefore I was thinking set to Europe and then get the max results in England, Wales, Scotland then fly over the channel and FTXG will be to its full affect. Not so, evidently. . Therefore if I am flying in Europe and do not intend to cross the Channel, I will select Global but not hybrid. If I am going to fly across the Channel, then Global/hybrid. If only in England, Scotland Wales, will select Europe. Yes, I also presumed that enabling one FTX region (instead of using FTXG and hybrid) would leave FTXG outside of that region completely as it was but indeed that doesn't seem to be the case. It's a pity but not a huge problem. I decided to never use the hybrid mode. I usually fly GA and my routes aren't longer then 100 to 120 nm. Usually shorter (50 to 80 nm). Even when I fly the 737NGX I do rather short flights so it's not a problem staying within a region, let alone not being able to fly from one FTX region to another which I will never ever do anyway. Not seeing everything as it is intended IS however a 'problem' for me so I either fly above FTXG (FTXG without hybrid) or I fly within an FTX region (with that region enabled). The fact that FTXG makes the borders of a region less obvious (or better said invisible) is enough for me: I don't own Wales and I didn't like flying near that border when flying in FTX England but that's not a problem anymore. I might even land in Wales (or Scotland) with FTX Europe enabled and take the little errors in FTXG (which I probably won't even notice) for granted. So in that regard I might even keep FTX Europe enabled as my default. But well... the idea that something might not be as intended when flying outside an FTX region will make me switch things in FTX Central frequently. ^_^ I like to have it ALL and spending a few seconds switching regions is worth it for me. I'd STILL like to know what exactly changes in FTXG when you enable one region though...

All in all I have some great food for thought and plan to put it to work when I have time, soon. Cheers, No probs at all Gareth! .... I only 'persisted' because I had a sort of semi-related problem, with the FTX ENG Airports (Shoreham etc) and how they interracted with FTX Central ..... and updating the Orbx Core Update resolved it by putting the latest version of FTX Central in command of all the regions and Orbx stuff I had intstalled.
August 15, 201312 yr Good clarification here! Basically it seems it all behaves pretty much like it says on the tin, but as Jeroen said it would be interesting to know in layman's terms just what is actually happening in the ORBX Central switching process. But not essential knowledge I guess. JV is the sort of guy who doesn't open more cans of worms than he needs to. Last night I set Global/Hybrid and moved to my default airfield (EGHH). I was chuffed to see Bournemouth Apt. and environs as if Europe Region had been selected. I then took a look at Paris (LFPG), Sion in Switzerland, Nairobi and finally Aden,Yemen - all of which have touched my life at different times. Yes, there was the familiar FTX footprint (yeah) but, despite the cited 'compromises', I liked what I saw. Anyway, to cap it off I moved way down to Auckland NZ (my home town for many years too), to see what would happen (I have FTX SI/NI). Behold, I found Auckland pretty much as if I had that Region selected as well. Wow, I was ready to grab a Flight Plan and go! Now Jeroen, you're clearly a perfectionist and I respect that. You want it ALL. But speaking for myself, so far, Global/Hybrid delivers a pretty darned impressive one-world effect. Of course, now I'm compelled to explore (as in look for trouble) to try and find the trade-offs locked into ORBX's design parameters. Will I be made to eat my words? Whatever, ORBX is here to stay and I think we should expect the unexpected from this stable. In the end, and speaking as a Brit who lived 26 years in NZ plus 6 in Oz, the Aussies, as blokes, are true to themselves. Fair dink. They don't suffer fools gladly but neither do they want to look like fools. That well of talent will do greater things yet I feel. Just to put the lid on these ramblings, yesterday I stumbled across a MegaSceneryEarth 2.0 demo and was very impressed by the seamless-looking never-repeating real-world birds-eye view effect. But what always lets it down for me personally is the view below 1000 ft and the unrealistically flat dream-like landscape at ground level. That, and of course the cost, made me realise that for this simmer at least, FTX is the way to go. But of course it horses for courses - we're all different, eh. I fully expect that within the next few years cloud-based 3-D environments will be available for us to fly in and we might have reached flightsim Nirvana, for my generation at least ;-) Cheers, Gareth Wilkinson LEAL Costa Blanca, SPAIN
August 15, 201312 yr Will I be made to eat my words? Probably not. ^_^ I do believe the differences are small and you will probably have to compare screenshots made with and without hybrid mode to actually see the differences. If possible... It's just the IDEA that something MIGHT not be totally right that made me decide to not use hybrid. But of course the Orbx guys know what they are doing and I am probably nitpicking. A while ago I read on the FTX forum thay they even think about making hybrid mode the default mode and hence remove the need (or possibility) for switching at all which shows they themselves have great convidence in the hybrid mode.
August 15, 201312 yr Wow that is interesting. I suppose I could say 'I rest my case ...!?' I have to say btw that I love that RealAir Legacy too. Best of the bunch . Let's hear it for planes that make you think a bit. I like the Aerosoft Piper Cheyenne for the same reason. I trained many moons ago on the DH Chipmunk T10 (RAF). Basic but fully aerobatic and unforgiving. Great fun it was, a thoroughbred in its own way. And it made flying the likes of the small Cessnas and Victa Air-tourer I would fly later on, as easy as falling out of bed. Now of course if we have a powerful lap-top we can actually go flying IN bed. Which definitely has its appeal at my age of 20 x 3 + 10. Hmm, I guess it must be time for my Siesta ... Best wishes guys. Gareth Wilkinson LEAL Costa Blanca, SPAIN
