FSX Long haul with ATC

Recommended Posts

Once at altitude, I just request IFR be cancelled.  When I near my destination, I request an IFR flightplan and reload the flightplan but do not request my aircraft be moved to the point of origin.  I click no there and I'm still on my previous flightplan and ATC takes over for the descent.

Best regards,

Jim

That usually works most of the time too, but sometimes (not many), it will direct you all the way back to the first way point, and unlike the method described above it won't update your position, and nag you till you comply, or it times out with an IFR Flight cancelled.

Thanks

Tom

Probably not what you want to hear but you could try VATSIM

or IVAO

I personally have not seen that Tom but I guess it is possible.

Best regards,

Jim

Like I say, it's the exception not the rule!! These FSX Atc idiosyncrasies is one of the main reasons why I went to PFE!!

Thanks

" it will direct you all the way back to the first way point"

That is mean you missed the first way point.

Same here! I'm waiting to see what they do to fix the problems, and how they ultimately handle AI before I consider moving to PROATC-X.

I agree with all of the above, I  use a slight variation when using SID's. Don't construct an IFR plan in the FSX planner until airborne. Establish initial contact with ATC, ask for a clearance for departure in a direction, eg " Request departure to the south" (or whatever is the first SID waypoint direction) this way, ATC has established communication with you, for clearance and taxi to the active runway. I might add that if the airport is IFR  weather  then you will not get clearance from ATC. Once airborne, ATC will handover to the next controller, keep doing this and let the aircraft fly your FMC route until you've reached cruise altitude THEN construct or load your IFR flightplan, and ask ATC for IFR clearance. As your in cruise, ATC will tell you to turn and climb to your already achieved flight mode. Wait until ATC hands you over to the next controller BUT don't establish contact.

IF you want to fly a STAR approach at your destination and just prior to you FMC descent point, re-establish contact with ATC, then ask for descent in increments of 10,000' feet blocks so that you will always keep ahead of ATC descent requests, While flying the STAR, ATC will try and vector you the way it wants, IGNORE this, as long as you keep asking for further descent paths to coincide with your STAR, ATC will not cancel you clearance. EVENTUALLY, as you near finals ATC will tell you to contact Tower for landing instructions. An important point - prior to descent and if within range dial up ATIS to find the active Runway at your destination, you might have to change your STAR in the FMC, if ATIS is out of range then descend to an altitude that is the highest of all the STAR's available for that airport, ATIS will be received long before this point is received, so you have plenty of time to confirm/change the STAR.

This sounds long winded but I've made several 12 hour flights using this method, and given the shortfalls of the FSX ATC, this I believe, achieves a somewhat realistic IFR flight.

Hope this helps.

I just use simroutes for that prob!

How does simroutes give you ATC? I use it too  - for flightplanning not ATC clearances. Please tell me how it works

A feature of Radar Contact is that you can tell it to pause FSX at a given distance from your destination. I set mine for 140 miles and when at altitude and cruise speed with Otto at the comms I just set the acceleration to 2x and go about other things around the house. I do check on it every so often and when the flight pauses, it waits for me instead me waiting for time and distance to go by. Wonderful feature I really appreciate having for the long hauls.

YES!

Tune the frequency but DO NOT CONTACT THE CONTROLLER.

+1. It really does work!

PFE has this feature too! Is there an acceleration limit on RC4, or can it handle up to 16X ?(The FS limit for AP use in most aircraft - Some can't even go up to that.) I have taking the CS777-200LR all the wy from FAOR to KATL in 16X acell and PFE never missed a beat! It picked up right where it should, when the sim was put back to normal speed.

Thanks

Good Evening, Tom;

I have taken FSX with RC4 up to 8X, haven't tried 16, yet. The flight plan I had included several near 90 degree turns and the aircraft went beyond the allowable off-course limit, resulting in control sending me back to properly cross the waypoint. I would imagine with more gradual turns even at 16X RC4 can keep up, although I would only use the max for trans-oceanic flights. RC does give me the option to increase the width of the flight path to allow for further "straying" although still being new to RC4 I have not touched those yet.
