Canadian pilot charged with dangerous operation of an aircraft.

Featured Replies

A 26 year old pilot rented an aircraft from Markham Airport and decided to buzz his friends house in Richmond hill (Toronto Suburbs). He is now charged with dangerous operation of an aircraft and could face 5 years in prison. neighbours called police who thought he may have had engine problems so they started closing streets so he could land. A police cruiser went to Markham Airport and arrested him when he landed.

Here is a youtube video of his stunt, you can see 3 flybys, best footage starts about 30 seconds in:

Hope he never flies an aircraft ever again.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Just shows you how, pilot or non-pilot, some people just ain't running on much common sense juice.....

What an idiot. This is what makes lawmakers in favor of cutting out funding and not thinking twice when a proposal to close an airfield comes up.

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.

How do you go to the airfield thinking "Man! This is a good idea!"

Wow that was dumb! The arrest is stupid though, they should just take his PL

I would of thought his flight school training would of taught him many do's and do not's?

Yeah, they should revoke his pilots license IMO too.

Disagree, They where right to arrest him and anyone who thinks otherwise should never be allowed to have a pilots license because they do not understand and probably never will the gravity of this kind of behaviour. I cannot believe this guy did not show up on the Radar before he pulled this stunt. If you are not completely aware after completing Ground School and Flight training that this kind of ludicrous behaviour is entirely unacceptable I don't know what Kind of flight training you got or what kind of CFI did not see that your attitude and aptitude made you unsuitable for flight training.

I say send him to jail for five year and set an example.

Am i the only one who thinks its a bit far fetched to have the police close roads expecting him to emergency land on them without ANY communication of the event to the pilot by ATC? How did they expect him to know they were even closing roads if they didn't contact him first? Unless they did and he went along with it...

Yes you are the only one!

From the video I am guessing that there were large highways around. Which makes me think the police probably got a lot of calls that a plane was trying to land on the road. They may have tried to clear him a path.

The 911 call to the police said they suspected he had engine problems. When they tried to contact him by radio you wouldn't know if his problems included electrical problems as his radio could have been dead.

He was seen flying around with flaps down and engine on idle making multiple passes over an area. This could be seen as someone trying to make a forced landing, and yes it could be seen as he had problems with his radio as well.

When the police eventually caught up with him you bet they weren't very happy about it.

A few years ago there was a Piper that made a landing on the 407 highway in this same area. So yes it has happened before.

Also a recent crash of a (Bonanza I think) that crashed into the roof of the Toy Story Toy Distributor and the Q107 Radio Traffic Report Cessna crashed in this area as well. So this is a known busy area.

Buttonville Airport is the 3rd busiest airport in Canada on a sunny day when all the recreation pilots come out so a lot of activity in the area when the weather is nice.

Here is an article about that Piper landing on the 407:

From what I understand when this pilot made his landing on the highway he 'merged' into traffic as he made his approach from the side of the highway. This is also a very congested freeway

According to the news item, he would not answer repeated calls to him.  He should get nothing short of jail time.
