Pfpx is it worth it if I've already got a flight planner?

Featured Replies

Hmm, in the video above; showing the aircraft templates. I'm not seeing FSL Concorde.

Is this due to Pierre creating Concorde Perf. Sys. instead. IF so, how would I incorporate PFPX to create a plan to use in CPS.

It looks like you have to load an aircraft...correct.   Will a Concorde Template have to be built then?

Holding on purchase till clarification.

Thanks.

David

Does it give Cost Index?

It doesn't give you Cost Index.  You can enter it but it won't create a value for you.  In the real world, that's set by the airline.  They decide a CI that is used cross the board on all flights and/or it can even change per flight too.  But, PFPX doesn't generate that number.  You can google "cost index database" and I think you will find some posts where users have posted these numbers for some airlines if you want to try to find the CI for a specific airline that you fly for.

ah yes but if you buy the T777 with its nifty time accelerator you can spend 3 hrs planning and 10 mins flying .

Instant classic

I was wondering about the usefulness of PFPX for flight planning recently as I get all my routes from the real world routes I find in Flightaware.  But I have found PFPX worth it's weight in gold for the excellent fuel planner and for determining what my payload should be.  Compiling all the different data and creating professional looking dispatch paperwork is where this software shines, so even if you already know the route and waypoints, these other facets of the flightplanning process were sorely lacking in software we previously used.

From the performance standpoint, I'm not sure how useful PFPX would really be for Concorde flights, because of the one-of-a-kind performance envelope that the aircraft flew under.

For the standard BA and AF service to and from KJFK, the aircraft always flew exactly the same route each and every day, and the passenger and fuel loads were probably very similar from one flight to the next as well. As you know, the FSL Concorde already comes with many pages of pre-printed, pre-calculated nav and performance logs for those standard flights.

For non-standard routes and loads, I don't think any software (including PFPX) could come close to the functionality of Pierre's CPS in calculating fuel loading and distribution requirements - the fuel system in Concorde was so extraordinarily complex, and the CG shifts between subsonic and supersonic cruise so "unique", that only a purpose-built program like CPS could really do the job.

However, PFPX would be perfectly suitable to build the FSX PLN files for import into CPS.For that, you do NOT need an aircraft performance template. The PFPX route generation functions can be used without defining a specific type of aircraft.

I still think its a little over priced, mind you FSC9.3, which is what I use, is about the same price.

How can you then state it's over priced? I have FSC myself, but now I have PFPX I highly doubt I will ever touch FSC again. PFPX does A LOT more then FSC and it does it easier and faster. So how can it then be over priced???

I see a $35.00 program here NOT $53.00! Seems like this will add still more time to planning and flight preparation/setup preflight. It already takes long enough to get a flight underway in FSX, leaving less and less time for actual flying.

In fact it REDUCES the amount of planning/prepping by an enormous amount of time. I can now have a complete package in less then 5 minutes, assumed I select an aircraft already available in de database.

If I reuse a route already made its even shorter....

Not trying to jump down your throat, but I don't think it's fair to give people the impression that the program is unstable based on what you've described.

Except for the fact that Jim confirmed that others are also having similar problems. If you think I'm unfair in saying that there are stability issues, please visit the official support forum and read some of the topics.

Also my laptop has no problem running FSC, FsBuild, FSGRW, TOPCAT, ProATC, Airhauler, FS Flight Keeper, REX Latitude, Aivlasoft EFB and vRoute.

The only program that keeps crashing is PFPX.

Im using Vroute premium and here is the flight card for my current flight Bangkok to Phuket.

Fuel burn based on weight and weather, in this case pmdg 737

Also Vroute allows you to create a flight plan with NAT waypoints in it

I cant find any info on ETOPS so I will post a question in the forum.

Sids/stars inc.

Do I really need  PFPX?

edit. I can also add my own real world route (copy npaste) and it does an auto validtaion process on the spot. If there is an error it auto explains why.

Its  also around half the price

Yea  naturally it  be half the price  since its been out  for a while, if you wait  a few years  pfpx  will be  the same price.  Plus  there are more features on what you can do with pfpx  than you can do on vroute etc

thanks for the info Jim. i was under the impression younhad to use an aircraft to complete the flight plan. i use CPS all the time... great program!

i'll take a look at the PFPX program/manual.

best

good point, it also doesnt use the weather as I thought nor can it step climb

PFPX has it's own templates and TOPCAT has it's own. They contain totally different data and are not interchangeable.

PFPX currently has more templates than TOPCAT. Also users can create their own PFPX aircraft templates (if one has the data and/or patience).

If you are interested fuel calculations, then "only" PFPX aircraft template is required. If you want takeoff and landing performance on top PFPX data, then you also need a TOPCAT profile.

think that Kyle  has explained it  perfectly  in his latest video

It seems a good software to invest on... I already use TOPCAT for some years now and coming from the same developer, I can only assume it is a good tool.

Just a "heads up" re TopCat if you do decide to purchase. TopCat licensed version is currently 2.7, even if you use the "check for updates" function. If you try to export your PFPX settings to TopCat it says you need to have 2.72. 2.72 is available on the PFPX site, but I wasn't sure if it's OK to download 2.72 over the top, and didn't get a definitive answer from the Topcat forum, but went ahead anyway, and all seems good.

"To be honest, I would have paid up to $100 for PFPX. It combines so many of the tools I have purchased in the past."

+1

I use the iFly 737NG, and it has streamlined the process of getting the flightplan into the iFly nav folder, and getting the payload and fuel into the FMC enormously. First weather software I've seen that also provides significant weather charts. Agreed, not that essential for sim pilots, but often the first chart RW pilots look at, especially in the summer. We flight simmers like to have it as authentic as we can get!
