For those of us confined to a desk for the holiday weekend, I thought I might generate some interesting conversation by asking a question.  After all, we really don't have anything else to talk about till next week. :)  What were the last 5 or so add-ons you purchased and why.  Do you still like the add-on?  Would you buy it again?  My last five were:

MSEv2 California - The last MSEv2 purchase I plan to make.  That gives me all the states across the southern US and up the Atlantic Coast.

EU Northern Ireland by ORBX - Since I own all the other ORBX regions, I almost felt obligated to purchase this.  However, I think it is way overpriced for the small area and very few landmarks and POIs.

Just Flight L-1011 Tristar - On Sale for $12.00  Why not?

FTX Global ORBX - Finally purchased this after the uninstaller became available.  Not a great improvement over GEX, but I had GEX coverage on just a small part of the US.  Worldwide ... game changer... love it.

Lionheart Creations Super Pacer - On Sale for $8.00 and I used my points to get it FREE from Just Flight.  I love this little airplane.  A friend of mine owns this plane and we fly it all the time.  An excellent rendition.

As you can tell, I'm a flight sim/add-on junkie.  I figured out today that I have made over 200 individual add-on purchases since I returned to flight simming in August, 2011.  I don't even want to try and add up the money.  And that doesn't even count the complete computer upgrade.

I'll probably purchase PFPX, the 777, and the A2A 172 w/accu-sim.  And I've been really considering the Twotter.  It will never end ....

In order starting from top down:

PMDG 747 - The first add on for FSX after I transitioned from FS9. I still fly this Queen of the Skies once in a while, mostly simulating some kind of failure.

PMDG MD-11 - When I bought this add on, I thought my rig was complete! Simply one of the best wide body airliners for desktop simulation.

Captain Sim WXR - Review purposes, but it turned out to be one of the most used add-on utilities for me. A lot of people were going on about the inaccuracies, but for me, I just use it to detect thunderstorms in zero visibility, so it serves its purpose for me detecting bad weather.

FSDT GSX - one of the "must-haves" for simulation realism. Use it every flight.

PMDG 737NGX - Just one word - extraordinary  B)

And like Dennis, the PMDG 777 is most likely my next purchase unless I go for another utility or scenery while I wait for the PMDG's release.

I don't tend to buy too many addons but my last five were.

1. CaptainSim 767 on sale

2. CaptainSim 757 on sale

3. Milviz C-310 on sale

4. Milviz B-55 on sale

and

5 FlightBeam KPHX or CYVR which ever came out last.

And I don't even have FSX installed on my system. I just bought a 256 SSD drive and would be re installing Win7 on a SSD and FSX on another.

The aircraft that I'm really excited about is the A2A Simulations C-172 trainer. I was sold just on watching those videos.

The PMDG 777 looks great but I bet it is going to cost an arm and a Leg.

Fun thread by the way.

FS Dream Team Hawaiian Airports volumes 1 and 2 since I already had Honolulu, but no place close enough to fly around. Then it was the Eaglesoft Citation X 2.0 to replace Eaglesoft Citation X 1.0. I think the next one was the PMDG 747-400. I don't remember what came before that.

PFPX - still getting to know the program but I LOVE IT! I ran a 3.5 hour flight yesterday with the NGX from EGKK to LGIR. Fuel planning and time estimates were on the money, and the route I planned using the Advanced Flight Planner was near enough identical to the real world plan.

Pro ATC/X - decent enough, still has some development to go but at least it is still in development! A few other ATC programs seem to be on freeze just now. This addon is not complete by any means but, the words of the devs are, we are near to a breakthrough in something that has not been done in ATC development before!

Eiresim Alicante Ultimate - Nice rendition of LEAL, only one on the market IIRC.

AS2012 - really like it. Easy interface, active development, included graphics options. Haven't tried the alternatives but I don't see any need to because this software fills all my WX needs.

Imaginesim KATL 2012 - it's OK. It hasn't been used much as I do most of my flying in and about Europe. Once the T7 is out then I think it will be used a lot more  ^_^

Nice idea for a thread Dennis. Thanks!

For me (FS9 simmer here):

FSGenesis NEXTMap Spain - I needed a good mesh for Spain from a reliable source. And it was at a good price!

Carenado C90B - Bought the FS9 version on release day. It's tough on my system, but flyable and smooth. I just have to settle for 15-20 FPS instead of my more typical 35-50 FPS.

FSGenesis NEXTMap Germany - Another mesh. I am a fiend for geographic accuracy. I'm a geology student and I also love geography as well - I like maps.

Carenado Baron  - Bought the FS9 version on release day. Also tough on my system, but I like it.

Carenado C337 - Bought this on release day, too! That was way back in January - I don't spend a lot on addons these days, you see! This one is a gem - easy on FPS and darn near perfect for me.

Although there are MANY FS9 addons I want, I don't buy very many these days. What I have meets my needs flying. I run a very VFR-oriented sim with high-res mesh, good ground textures, and Ultimate Terrain. I've also got the two Flightzone sceneries and everything Holger Sandmann ever published for FS9, pay or free.

Lately, I've been getting my best sceneries from FSX - it's not difficult to convert most sceneries for FS9 to some useable level, although some features are lost.

Wait! Xplane to me. You bought MSE California and then ORBX FTX Global? How does that work together, or do they? Did I miss something (again I might add)?

Starting with most recent:

Orbx Global - Totally worth it

Flight1 B200 - Totally worth it

Aerosoft Twin Otter Extended - Nice but not been flying it much.

Carenado CT206H - Also nice, but have been flying others more.

Carenado TBM850 - Would not buy again. B200 is far superior.

FTX Global is below my stack of MSEv2 sceneries in the scenery library that I might use for any given flight.  I really don't think it needs to be, because my understanding is FTX Global can be considered as FSX default terrain, which shows up anywhere there was no additional scenery above it.  I just put the MSEv2 above as a standard practice as shown in the photo below.  Those three checks are the only items selected that aren't stock FSX.

This is a screenie of my Bonanza flying due south straight down the Alabama/Mississippi line near Mobile.  The gulf coast is in the distance.  Alabama MSEv2 is on the left and Mississippi FTX Global is on the right.  Pretty amazing.

Hope this helps explain.  This is how I do it.  Others may have a different strategy.

Most recent on top

1. PFPX (Because it is the most awesome addon made for FS)

2. Cloud9 Xclass Europe (Because I wanted to try a 3rd party LC together with FTXG, result was not too good so it was shelved)

3. FTXG (Because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, and I am very satisfied with it still)

4. RXP GNS 530 WAAS (Because I needed a GPS in my Duke and the RXP is truly awesome)

5. Realair Duke B60 (Because I needed a GA plane for my Vatsim P5 rating)

1: PFPX - amazing

2: FTX Northern Ireland - amazing (UK is now complete)

3: UK2000 Leeds - amazing. UK2000 work is up there with the best

4: FTX Global - amazing

5: F1 B200 - amazing

Nothing short of amazing.

Posted

1. Pacific Island Simulations - Rarotonga (great work)

2. UTX- Canada

3. UTX - Mexico

(2 & 3 because I have started to fly into much smaller airports in these regions)

4. FSXAssist (has significantly increased the smoothness & some FPS gain)

5. Airport Enhancer HDX (for those airports which I have not added new AFCAD's for)

I am TRYING to not make any more purchases for awhile. These were all purchased in the last 30 days to increase my enjoyment with FSX!!

August was a bad month... or a good month, guess it just depends on how you look at it! I'm actually not sure if I can recall all that I bought in august, so I definately can't recall the exact order:

X) Captain Sim 727 & C130 (I know, that's two, but I bought them on that same sale, so...)

X) LHC Fairchild & Piper Pacer (Again, two, but on the same sale.)

X) FTXG

I'm not sure that hardware add-on's count, but I did pick up a second Saitek TQ in August as well. I can't recall if the B200 and the Twin Otter Extended were August purchases or not.. I came very, very close to buying the L-1011 on the sale just the other day, but I know that September is going to be rough on the simming budget as well so I managed to resist. (And was quite proud of myself for doing so!)

Dennis, okay, so what you are saying is that if you put MSE above Global FTX, that you will have the benefit of FTX overlaying that of the photo real of MSE so that when you depart KSAN as an example, you won't have flat terrain view but one that is populated with the FTX gen?
