Airlines, I beg you to start charging this fee!

Allegiant does this, they are an LCC though. I agree that this rule should be put in place. If its not going under the seat in front of you, you deserve to pay.

People wouldn't do this if they got a free bag in the hold, but if you were to incorporate the money made from hold baggage and add it onto peoples tickets, you'd end up with no one flying with you, and instead everyone flying with the competition that offers €15 cheaper tickets, but you have to pay €20 to put a bag in the hold. Consumers have demanded it be this way, yey for the free market and all that lark...

The last time I flew was on AA, and they used their own ground personel to take the pax luggage, which was carried through the gate into the jetway, and loaded the baggage hold themselves, adroitly stepping around the use (and charges!) of the airport's baggage handlers entirely. There was no charge for this service, and almost completely eliminated the need for pax to use the overhead bins...

...except for the usual camera bags, laptops, and small carryon stuff.

At the arrival end, once again their own personel unloaded the bags and delivered them to the pax in the jetway's access door.

I would not allow my hand luggage to be handled in that way.

Here are some tips from me on how to try and keep your sanity. Check you bags whenever you can. Yes, it will take a little time when you get to your destination, but you will avoid all the stress of trying to compete with all those crazies trying to stuff their golf bag into the overhead. And, it doesn't have to cost you anything if you plan ahead.

1. Spirit Airlines already charges for bags stored in the overhead, as well as checked baggage in the baggage compartment. And, you pay more to put it in the overhead then to check it. However, I try not to fly them as their seats are very cramped and do not recline. Be aware that they charge for EVERYTHING, including water, soda, etc., but if you fly a lot to where they go, join their $9.00 Club and use it. You will save a bundle.

2. Southwest does not charge for checked baggage or for carry on bags.

3. If you have to fly AirTran, book it online through the Southwest website, if you can. Look first at the AirTran website to determine what flight you want to use. Then go to the Southwest website and enter the destination and see if it pops up. If it says it is an Air Tran flight, book it. You will be able to check your bag free.

4. Get airline sponsored credit cards like Delta, United, etc. Use them to buy that company's flight on their website and you usualy get free baggage checks.

Even though all these things are available to everyone, they still keep trying to cram that two suiter bag into the overhead.

Southwest does not charge for checked baggage or for carry on bags.

Which is why I used them extensively during my recent trip to the West Coast.

... could be why they missed their profitability target this year. Perhaps they should consider applying some hidden charges.

4. Physical harm.  I saw a girl pull her suitcase out of the bin, didn't grab the back side and it came slamming down on an elderly mans head.  Thought he was going to die.  Instead he got a cup of water from the flight attendent and probably a headache and sore neck.  At least the girl didn't have to wait ten minutes in baggage claim.

Man, that sounds bad,I've seen some stupid things on flights, but that takes the biscuit.

People with big bags should be more careful when taking them out of the overhead bins. I've had quite a few idiots bang their bag into me.

One thing that amuses me when I'm on Aer Lingus Regional flights - is that people seem to think the cargo hold is with-in the cabin and haul cargo hold sized baggage onto the aircraft. The FA's never say anything, I think they don't for their own amusement! You see these people banging and banging (literally banging) their oversized luggage into the overhead compartment, if that doesn't work they try under their seat

LOL!  I just witnessed something like that the other night.  I was sitting in my seat watching this guy try to jam his suitcase into the overhead.  When that didn't work, he tried to push it under the seat in front of him-- which didn't work out either.  What kind of logic do these people have?

I thought the cargo hold was in the cabin in the ATRs...    At least now with the new -600s though there's much more space in the over heads for people to stow their baggage...  ^_^

Yes they do, but technically its not with-in the PAX cabin, theres a door connecting the two compartments  ^_^

  • 2 weeks later...

Best way to manage the inconsiderate people......have armed guards on the plane.

Have a 'rest area' in the hold for those that have had to have a mandatory 'nice chat' with the guards and drop them over the ocean during flight.

Won't be a problem on any flight ever again once word gets around.
