Hi,

he uses a trick to get the compact display: put the ND from MFD to EICAS mode (selector below the ND screen labeled INBOARD DSPL). Then select the left display on the synoptics panel (top left button L INBD), press the ENG button. You get the compact mode on the ND-screen. Now return the display selector for the ND back to MFD and select the LWR CTR button to return to the default state, but with the compact display displayed.

It will stay this way until you select the ENG synoptic again. For that reason it will not work if you have the ENG synoptic displayed on the lower EICAS while you do the switching.

If you watch carefully, you can actually see Cpt. Joe Moser pull this trick off on the DVD. During departure out of Hong Kong.
