Autoland query

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am wondering whether it is possible to do an autoland on a runway that is not ILS, could I at least just get down too 100ft or something and then take over manually or is there any way to do something similar to an autoland

Sorry about the multiple post but it said an unexpected error has occurred, so I assumed it didn't post, but there should be a delete button for the person who creates a post

You can do autoland on ILS/GLS signals only. You can use IAN; LNAV, VOR/LOC, HDG SEL with VNAV or V/S for non-precision approaches. But you should remember that autopilot minimum use height for that is MDA-50'.

Some Non-Precision-Approaches don't even line up with the runway.

The Runway 34 VOR approach at Melbourne YMML is 6° right of the actual runway heading

If you left the Autopilot tracking the approach centreline all the way down to the ground, you'd land in the car park!

This VOR approach at Cairns YBCS is more than 30° off the runway centreline.

The missed approach point is 1.7 miles before the airport!

if you flew that course all the way in on LNAV + VNAV and with altitude 0000ft selected on the MCP altitude, you'd impact a 1120ft tall mountain less than a mile from the runway.
