That was a TRACERT it was responding to in both cases, not a PING. In any case, yes, some servers are set not to respond and that is mostly likely the case.

Tom, tracert is pings with increasing TTL values. If it dont ping it won't get a response from a trace and vice versa,

I can't see any evidence that your using a content delivery network, is that true?

By the way, I've been getting the same thing. Just assumed it was server maintenance.

At exactly 09:30GMT today I got a 503 message. I didn't save the TRACERT instructions so couldn't run it.

Strangely, it didn't happen for me last night as usual. My ipad had it intermittently, and my computer was fine. :-/

From 920 your server is serving 503

 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">

</head><body>
<h1>Service Unavailable</h1>
<p>The server is temporarily unable to service your
request due to maintenance downtime or capacity
problems. Please try again later.</p>
</body></html>

Suspect your web server is queuing requests and if it can't serve a response within 30 seconds it returns 503.

Here is your web site from 920 to 945.Ping is fine throughout so not network issue, at least not this side of your server.

946, back to normal

Would def suspect a database maintenance job as the culprit or some other houskeeping job.

I confirm that I also got the 503 message at 0930 UTC in the UK this morning.

I have now given up trying to use AVSIM between 0900 and 1000 because this error is still persistent. It's specific to ASVSIM and I have no problems with any other sites world-wide  between those times.

Please do not bother with tracert or traceroute (if you are not a windows platform...). It is of no use in troubleshooting this, as this is not a network issue.

It is an issue with the server itself, as if some database repair facility is at work or some other system maintenance (maybe a backup?) is running and slowing the server down so much as to be unable to respond correctly to requests...

This is every morning...

You really need to see what the system is doing during these down times, so you need to be logged onto it and see what processes are running...

Avsim is one of the slowest fora I know at the best of times as it is...

I honestly have no problem with the speed of the forum system. Yes, it takes longer than other fora, but I am basically on the other side of the world to the servers, so I expect more loading time. I click on a page and normally wait a max of 15 sec for it to load.

In regards to the outages, I went to gather the info Tom requested, during the normal outage time, but the site was still up. I have never experienced the 0930UTC downtime, only ever 0815-0845UTC (but that seems to be resolved/gone now), so I can not comment on that.
