Quality and standard of the PMDG JS41?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

With the high qualities of the PMDG 737NGX and the recent release of 777, it's gotten me wondering how are their lines of turboprop products?

I have and enjoy the MJC Q400, I would say it is at similar if not the same level of complexity/quality as the higher-end PMDG products.  So that begs the question, how does the most recent turboprop JS41 measure up to the other big games from PMDG and other companies?

I see in the PMDG Ops Centre, there is an entry for the NGX, the 777 and the JS41, so that's why I ask:  Is the JS41 aimed at the same pool of customers as the NGX and T7; in turn indicating the level of realism in their system modeling?

You may have realised I mainly focused on the systems, which was on purpose; as the VC quality and system simulation (and FPS of course) are my main criterion to determine a purchase.  So I'm considering getting the JS41, and I would like to hear some feedback before I commit.

Notice how don't ask this question in the PMDG forum, as I would like get comments from simmers across the board (not only PMDG customers).

Thanks in advance.

I don't have the M Q400 to compare it against but it's very decent in many ways.   I am very disheartened they didn't take the time to make 2D popups on the main gauges as I use 50% zoom in the VC so text is too small on a large display.  It's possible to zoom in on what would in other simulations bring up a main 2D panel, but it's really just another VC repositioned for IFR training I think.  One could preset that view to be zoomed back up to 100% so you could read the small text involved.  I doubt it would have taken a huge amount more programming.   Other than that I like it.  Systems modeling seems decent.  I, truthfully, don't get in that deep so it's all I would ever need to have implemented.

why is that?

Its a great airplane. The fps are very good and the system depth is PMDG quality. The VC is very good also, even though it's an older PMDG model it can still hold it's own. I've flown the Brasilia irl and even though it's a totally different bird (it is the competition so its similar) it always makes me nostalgic when I fly it. The sound is good, starting the engines is realistic and yes, yes, yes you can burn up the engines so you have to be very careful but you can also turn that feature off. It's a slippery bird so you have to handle her with care and plan your approach accordingly but it's very rewarding. It's the perfect short hop aircraft. I fly it all up and down the Dominican Republic and no complaints here. I highly recommend fs2crew to assist you flyin this bird. I recommend it 110%

You cannot compare the J41 with anything on the FSX market. It's literally in a class of its own.

The PMDG J41 is a high quality simulation of a crappy airplane. The simulation doesn't disappoint...the airplane does.

LOL, I actually laughed!  I don't know the simulation, or the aircraft so I can't comment, but interesting way of putting it ;)

in what way?

it's a very good simulation of a J41. have it, love it. with fs2crew it's even better.

i like it, i think it's one of the better turboprops for fsx...definitely one of my favorites, i actually started flying vc-only (with ezdok) because of this plane..

the systems modeling is at the same level of detail as the other PMDG stuff, although of course the actual systems aren't as complex..., i like that the engines have a pretty unusual setup being fixed gear props with start-locks etc, they definitely require your attention to use correctly.

i'd say it's not quite as polished as the Q400 but it's pretty close.

I seem to remember PMDG described it as something of a technology demonstrator for the 737NGX at the time using an aircraft Robert Randazzo had flown personally during his career.

Part test run and part walk down Memory Lane then.  Also part way between PMDG's "lite" models like the Beech 1900D and the full blown MD-11, 747, 737 and 777 in terms of user features but probably close to them in terms of the fidelity of the modelling.  For example, it features modelling of icing to the extent that it can be hard to fly which is probably true to life in that type of aircraft.

What did let it down a bit is that a service pack was promised which was never delivered.....

I had a lot of fun out of it before the NGX took over so if you want a turbo-prop you could do worse,  Having said that, I don't have the Majestic Q400 but it's very highly rated by others and there are a lot more of those out in the real world if that matters to you.

Couldn't agree more. They should've gone with PT6's or P118's but they had to be different...

So I was just curious and looked up who were the operators for the JS41, to my surprise, very very limited airlines operated it!  Hardly any in US, average amount in EU, and hardly any in AU (as to be expected anyway)...

I think they chose it because its a bit of a beast, slippery for sure and a tendancy to blow up with an auto pilot that needs a bit of attention.

Having said that it was for me the most realistic plane before the 777 and the NGX ranks third.

IMO. its a must have turbo prop if you dont have one or you dont own the q400 already
