Thanks for the backslap. Your wife sounds wonderful but I have to tell you this. My wife dresses up as a stewerdess and when I push the cockpit button she shows up and asks what I need. It took awhile. Oh, one thing I wanted to ask you. Do you remember the U2's taking off from VN?

Take care... see you on the forum.

Bob

No, I was a little young when that was strong. The 4028th though I believe was out of Laughlin - TX. Not sure where most of the U2's went when they left Van Nuys. Actually I was just curious if you remember them leaving VN? My Dad seemed to know everything happening at that airport. In fact there was a guy by the name of Bill Dinky who had a heli school at the North end of the airport and he would take Dad and I up in the old Bell and hover on the west end of the airport to watch the U2 take off. It was a blast.

Bob, U2's broke runway well into the 70's out of Bien.   You would be just the right age, as I surmise  we both are in our mid 60's.....  They only had 3 active and one O.S.  They liked the fact that it was about as far as you could go south of the Orange Line. Bien sortied flights 24/7....but, back to civilian flight simming, much safer, and you can come back no matter what.... :)  the activity is no widow maker......

I do not have any ORBX products installed but do have UTX-USA and GEX-NA installed. Can I still install these freeware airports or do I need an ORBX product installed to do so? I did read that I need to have some ORBX libraries installed. Can I download those or do I need to get them by buying another product?   I do own ORBX-PWN but have not installed yet.

Ted

Ted, I really don't know...I do remember reading somewhere that unless you have the Base FSX Global product installed, and not any form of a PIRATE issue....they won't load in. I could be wrong. Why not download the installer and try it out?  They are marvelously done, and free for your enjoyment!!!

I did not know they were still operating in the 70's. I thought it ended in the mid 60's.  Well as much as I love flying and simming I still have to engage in a 1st person shooter just to change it up a bit. I am still on the fence with FTXG  as I fly mostly PNW. The airport addons for the PNW area will spoil you rotten.

I am just waiting for  the  " next big thing"  whatever that may be. I don't believe we need another weather engine though but they keep trying.

Hey Mitch, I just noticed your comment about Mulholland and Genny.  I was there and I too went steady with Genny. Wow she was hot. She never ever mentioned you though.

It's a good thing we are getting releases made to match FTXG. Alot of my previous addon airports looks quite bad now that I got FTXG installed. It's now better to not have a photo texture of a large area around the airport, it will only stick out in a distance and not look good at all.

I hope airport developers now will limit their efforts to strictly the airport area, and leave the surrounding ground textures to FTXG which in almost all cases is better. At least more plausible.

Thanks Sesquashtoo, I will most likely do that. I just thought I'd ask in case someone already found out that you needed to have a FTXG or a regional ORBX scenery already installed on your computer. I didn't think asking if the free airports were compatible with GEX would get a very friendly reception on the ORBX forums.  I used to fly into Big Bear when I lived in San Diego so I'd like to get this one.

You guys finding out on the AVsim forums that you dated the same girl in high school is hilarious. You should find her and take a road trip to visit her together...then report back here!

Ted, you need to have FTX Global.  You don't need PNW (it's the wrong region - Washington, BC Canada, and Oregon not California), just FTX Global.  It costs $100, but it is worth it.

My system specs: Intel [email protected] - 5.2 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB  DDR4  RAMNoctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler,1TB Seagate SSD, 4TB Seagate HD, Windows 10, Asus 32 inch monitor, Saitek Yoke, Throttle Quadrant, Rudder Pedals and Trim Wheel     Sims: MSFS2020      Preferred Aircraft  Black Square Bonanza, and Baron, A2A Comanche, PMDG DC-6, Red Wing L1049

Thanks AviatorMan, you just saved me some time installing and uninstalling, or trying to install. I am happy with GEX. I see differences in the comparison screenshots that users have posted between GEX and FTXG, but I can't say that one is better than the other.  I will probably get FXTG eventually, but right now there are too many other addons I'd like to get before buying something that is similar to GEX. I finally built a computer that can handle complex addons, so I've got a long list.

Actually Bob, and if we are both in our mid 60's....and if you also truly went to Mulholland, and was into varsity football, you could NOT MISS   Genny X.  I played Left Guard, Offense at Mulholland, and she was elected Homecoming for her rah-rah efforts on the field. That should cement in your mind of whom I speak.  I don't know what she did beyond my moving out of state, but let me assure you...she had a mind and resolve, to be well respected, even in our early teens like a steel trap...and Bob,I wouldn't be surprised one iota if she currently, or past retired, is/was the C.E.O. of any major player.  I have REALLY enjoyed this thread today. I have not thought of certain memories for decades.  I'm just glad that my wife doesn't have one interest in flight sim sites...cause if she did and read this post.....lawd...women are certainly capable of competitive jealousy even if the memory was of a long ago 'going steady' in your Jr. high school years....and SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS TODAY!  LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!   You know Bob...we probably DID walk past each other, as youths, or ate in the cafeteria...and what a truly small, small world it is....who would have thought...that this thread would start, lol!   Cheers my sim'ing friend, and long life to you and your wife. Enjoy that motor home.  I intend to Goldwing, as long as I can keep the weight balanced...lol.  Had a great trip to Antietam and Gettysburg, just last week....and have two coffee mugs, one from each of the battlefields...am sipping (lol!) from 'Gettysburg' as I type this post....  Ah.....life is good....and I am blessed.

Yes you know I was just making up Genny, but yes I did go to Mulholland. Gault Street then Mulholland then Birmingham then the Military then a little bit of study at pierce college in the valley. Cheers to you Mitch. Maybe one day you will run into to Genny somewhere sometime. I am sure that would be the icing on the cake. To bad she could not read this thread, as I am sure it would put a big smile o her face. I was in Gymnastics and had no interest in football until my senior year at Birmingham so I probably saw her and you. I wonder if Mulholland has their album for that year posted somewhere?  Glad for you and your trip. Keep going as long as you can!!!

First shooter?  Yeah, (sigh...)  My son is much involved in the 'Call of Duty' franchise.  When he is playing it on the big screen, I usually/have to...leave the room, go out on the patio. It stirs up too many bad memories. If I find him playing it as I come to see my grand daughters, I seem to have nightmares for at least two weeks after. Bad stuff.  I ask him why he plays it...and he always comes back that I lived it, so why can't he 'simulate it'?  Bob...his generation has no idea, of the real deal.  He can turn off the monitor and walk away.  You and I could not. We lived it, smelled it, tasted it...and mourned when your Company lost a soul(s). They don't understand, the X generation, but for them, it is only a game....  Anyway...enough typed on that subject!  -------------------------------------------------------------->

A better subject:  I have all the ORBX regions to date, have FSXG, and am now eyeing that Yellowstone head's up I just got in the email.  Looks really good for the CRM!

Bob...we're almost brothers after this thread today....and look,.... one brother would never give another a bum steer...GRAB FSXG....RUN....GRAB...it truly brings the sim visually to the 2013's.  My gawd...drop the $100.00 and be amazed (along with UTX, though!!!!  Most important until we see the OpenLC....)   I was almost ready to retire FSX...but now, can't stop firing her up....and also a side note. I have to SOLELY lay my lack of any further CTD's and OOM's at the feet of FSXG. Why?.....because the coverage and depth of depiction has allowed me to drop both the Auto-Gen and Scenery Complexity sliders to Very Dense, from my what was the standard; Extremely Dense. That..and that alone without touching any other graphic slider...ended my 20 minute flights.....   Tonight...with all this talk about Van Nuys...(good stuff, man, good stuff!!!!), I am shortly going to program a flight between Van Nuys (the new freeware goodie from this morning) and Phoenix, Sky Harbor....

Happy sim'ming...and again, was a blast down memory lane, good, bad, or indifferent!  It brought back many faces to mind, of good and strong, upright men, still living, and  those, now in honored memory....

I guess that Bob was ribbing me, LOL!   I had thought as much. I graduated from Mul,  so she and I were an item for the duration.  She was a veritable beauty in form and spirit, then. I can only imagine the lucky man who shared his life with her over the years.  But...I am also a very lucky man....for there are many, many wonderful women who have made their men, that much better....I'm one for sure!  My wife has been a life-keeper!

Cheers!
