Autolanding the B777 in very bad weather

Featured Replies

Hi gents,

Right so I have logged quite a few long hauls in the T7 since release date, but have never really had any bad weather approaches, until about 15 minutes ago!

I was approaching VHHH which showed weather with winds 220 @ 27 knots, medium precipitation (read rain), and visibility down to 3200 meters.   Now, I am still getting to grips with the flaring and landing techniques with the 777, so I figured this would be the perfect time  to test out the auto land on this aircraft.

When I approached the runway the winds had shifted to 0 degrees at 32 knots, but I saw this too late, which meant that the winds were hitting me on the right hand side of the fuselage just more than 90 degrees off, very close to, most likely exceeding the limits for a safe landing with the auto land (in fact exceeding the safe limits for a crosswind landing period!).   I was approaching on runway 25R.

The aircraft and the auto thrust system performed flawlessly!   I was still commenting to myself about the amazing landing the aircraft had pulled off when I pulled into the cargo ramp at VHHH LOL!

I really enjoyed that!

Kind regards.

There is a huge tropical storm there and surrounding area at the moment.

Landed there about three hours ago, was fun.

Flew a few patterns there myself this evening, FSGRW gave me quite a show, intc loc at 4000 with gusting 60-70 kts crosswind and at one point I had a 35 degree crab down the loc :) Though it quited down to 25-30 and abit more to the nose before touchdown, she was steady all the way down. I did a Autoland to full stop and then two landings with A/P disco at 1500, all three went well. Awesome bird!

Nice, I was planning to fly there myself but because I'm preparing for some very important exams that I will have soon I didn't have time to study and plan the flight properly so I decided to do my first full 777 flight a bit later...

Maybe I should fly there later using historical weather...

i manually landed there too when the wind was 310@30, but wind was constant so it was easy. I was using Opus but if it was the real thing there would be constant windshear and landing anything would be very hard. Anyone know how to set Opus to have windshear?
