Who is using a 30' 2560x1600 monitor ?

Hi all

 

with everyone moving to faster, bigger and better, who is using a 30 inch monitor with a 2560x1600 setup ?  I have been debating for months whether to go down this road.  I'm currently using a 24' 1920 x 1200 res setup with which I have been very happy for a number of years.

 

My GC is a Nvidia 660Ti GTX with 2GB mem.  and my CPU is an i7 950 @ 4.0Ghz o/c.  If upgrading to this monitor, would I need to upgrade the graphics card memory to 3GB, or would the current setup cope with the bigger display and resolution?

Eric, I have the Dell Ultrasharp U3011" and GTX680, I run native 2560x1600x32 with no issues, your GPU will be just fine. You'll love the 30", I went up from 24" and suddenly my cockpit was 1:1

I am using a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 as well.... Its an amazing beast....! You will not regret it... All I can say is shop around and hopefully find some place with a good return policy incase you do not like it. Good luck....!

I run a pair of Dell U3011s here fed by a water-cooled GTX680. Would never consider going back to my old 26". Plus, the taller 16:10 aspect ratio gives you some very nice-to-have vertical screen space the 16:9 HDTV format screens do not.

Yes - the 16:10 ratio is a great contributor to the immersion feel.  I use TrackIR with mine.  Having tried triple screens and projection in the past, I find the HD 30" the best visual experience yet.

I also run the Dell U3011, its an amazing monitor. Another vote for the greatness of the 16:10 ratio, I run a GTX690 card and have no issues at the native 2560x1600 resolution.

Yes, I too have heard horror stories about the U3014. Poor quality, erratic displays etc. The Amazon user reviews have not filled me with confidence.

 

What is the difference between the U3011 and the U3014? Is the latter the later version?

You can get them anywhere from $900 to $1200 new; steep depends on what you do with the monitor. For me it was completely worth it, P3D/FSX is amazing at 2560x1600; colors are perfect as well. My specs are in my PC profile, I'm working on tweaking NI a little more but I have been getting 25-30 fps with REX 2048x2048 textures along with FSDT airports. FSX is about the same as I am running 1024x1024 textures and the NGX. My 3930k is at 4.4ghz.

I have no doubt it is the creme de la creme of screen tech. I'll hold off. Waiting for 32" to become mainstream. 27" is finally. 32 should follow in a year I hope. Then prices should run into the $500 or less zone. Not quite at that quality but should still be good.

I'm using an HP LP3065 30" 2560 x 1600 and a couple of Dell 24" ... but next year I plan to step up to the Asus PQ321 31.5" at 3840 x 2160 ( http://hothardware.com/Reviews/ASUS-PQ321-Ultra-HD-4K-315inch-Monitor-Review/ ) and hopefully not have to use AA at all.
