How much do airlines pay to have jets painted?

Recommended Posts

What is the single plane cost of painting different sizes of airliners?

Who does it? Does the airline typically have a paint shop? Or are there certain airports where they go to schedule a paint job by a company specializing in it?

Here's a shop for the smaller planes. Well, 'smaller'. ^_^ Don't know about the price tag though. Good question.

I've seen figures run from $30K for a single color paintjob on a business jet through upwards of $100K, even $150K for intricate work on a jet.

Generally it appears to be $50-60K per aircraft in a simple livery such as Delta's (words on the fore fuselage and logo on tail.)

Blimey, I'm in the wrong business!

That's some serious money. Thanks for the information.

The TV show Black Gold had an episode where one guy couldn't handle working on an oil rig anymore so he got a job repainting GA aircraft. Apparently it involves spray painting a lot of solvent onto the aircraft to strip the paint first. Pretty toxic stuff and looked like hard work (ie full protective clothing in hot weather, no thanks)  even for just a small GA prop plane.

Jetstar is getting it's first 787 shortly (or maybe it is here already). A week or two ago they had it on the news.

I think, can't confirm, that Boeing have a paint hangar and they paint any new 787 there. I guess it is part of the purchase price for a new plane?

Here's a time lapse video of the Jetstar 787 from being built to being painted.

That's one repaint I won't be trying!

Fascinating movie.

All the plane manufacturers (apart form maybe some biz jet builders) have their own paint shops.

Airlines with a large maintenance department will also have their own paint shops (though only at their maintenance base(s) of course), other airlines will use those, or paint shops belonging to a dedicated MRO (maintenance, repair & overhaul) provider.

As for costs, there's people (24 hours times 10 or so personnel times a couple of days), depreciation of the hangar and equipment and, 300-odd kilos of paint (a couple of thousand dollars I would guess). If you're not doing the painting yourself there's also a profit margin on top of that of course.

Overall 50-100k$ per paint job doesn't sound off for a big jet.

The All Black 777 ZK-OKW cost a whopping $800,000USD for Boeing to paint it at the Boeing Portland paint facility. Pity the poor sod who scratches it

Yeah the paint is removed with a spray on paint stripper, its left and then it just peels off! The paint on larger aircraft can add up to 2 tonne and more of weight, AA had it right with the bare metal!

Apart from the part where you have to polish bare metal far more often than you do paint. In the end the costs are about the same.
